Boxes of financial records, hard drives, and encrypted backup tapes were loaded into rolling federal carts while executive assistants watched in stunned silence.
Richard Worthington sat at his glass desk, watching two federal agents copy the contents of his private terminal. His legal team had abandoned him an hour earlier when they realized the scope of the falsified municipal audits. The evidence wasn’t just circumstantial; it was a systematic, decades-long conspiracy to defraud the city of Bellweather of millions of dollars in inflated invoices and stolen pension funds.
“You’re looking at corporate restructuring, Mr. Worthington,” Agent Miller said, laying a thick stack of subpoena notices on the mahogany desk. “At best, massive financial restitution and civil forfeiture of all subsidiary assets. At worst, conspiracy and fraud charges carrying significant federal prison time.”
Richard looked up, his legendary composure finally cracking. His face was pale, his eyes hollow. For forty years, he had believed that power was something you accumulated through real estate, political donations, and intimidation. He had never understood that a single act of casual arrogance by his son would pull the thread that unraveled the entire tapestry.
“Can’t we negotiate a settlement?” Richard asked, his voice losing its iron edge.
