Chapter 3 - The Truth Beneath the Surface

The silence that followed Dominic’s revelation was heavy, broken only by the distant hum of the estate’s heating vents. He reached out, his long fingers gently prying the leather photo album from my trembling grip. He didn't snatch it away with anger; his movement was deliberate, almost reverent, as if he were handling fragile glass.

“You shouldn't have opened this, Clara,” he said, his tone softening just a fraction, losing its lethal edge and replaced by a profound, exhausted resignation.

“I didn't mean to pry,” I whispered, looking up at him in the dim light of the flashlight. “When I saw how the house was structured... it felt like something was wrong. Like someone had deliberately cut a piece out of your family’s heart and tried to stitch the wound shut.”

Dominic let out a long, shuddering breath. He closed the album and laid it carefully back onto the oak desk. “My father built this wall thirty-five years ago. After Elena—my mother—disappeared. The official story given to the police and the family was that she abandoned us, ran off with someone else, and left me behind. Rosa believed it. Everyone believed it. Except me.”

“Because you knew the truth,” I said softly.

“My father was a paranoid, ruthless man,” Dominic muttered, turning his back to me and staring blankly at the wall of dust. “He ran this city with an iron fist, but he couldn't control her. She tried to take me away from this life, to give us a normal existence far away from the blood and the money. When he found out, he didn't just kill her dreams—he erased her. He bricked up her private study, destroyed her records, and threatened anyone who spoke her name.”

“And the men who work for you now?” I asked, thinking of Marco and the other armed guards who patrolled the perimeter. “Do they know?”

“Most of them are too young to remember,” Dominic replied, turning back to face me, his dark eyes searching my expression. “And the older ones know better than to ask. My father is long dead, Clara. But the enemies he made... they’re still out there. And they know that whatever my mother discovered before she died is hidden somewhere inside these walls.”

A cold shiver ran down my spine. “Is that why you’ve been traveling so much? Why you’ve been tying up loose ends in New York and Boston?”

Dominic didn't answer directly, but the grim set of his jaw answered for him. He had been hunting the people responsible for his mother’s disappearance—and protecting his remaining family from the fallout.

“Come out of there,” he said, extending a hand to help me step over the threshold of the hidden room.

As my hand slipped into his, I felt the heavy calluses on his palm—the mark of a man who carried the weight of an entire criminal empire on his shoulders. But for the first time since I had stepped foot onto the Caruso estate, the barrier between the “mafia boss” and the human being began to dissolve.

“You’re playing a dangerous game, Clara,” Dominic murmured, not letting go of my hand quite yet. “Digging into Caruso family history can get you killed.”

“Then it’s a good thing,” I replied with a faint, defiant smile, “that I’m an excellent housekeeper. I’m very good at cleaning up messes.”

A genuine, rare smile broke across Dominic’s face—a warm, striking expression that completely transformed his harsh features. But the fragile moment was shattered instantly by the shrill, piercing shriek of the estate’s security alarm echoing through the main corridors.
