Chapter 4 - THE SIEGE OF DOWNTOWN

When a cornered predator realizes it cannot win through intimidation, it resorts to desperation.

Three weeks after the incident at the Vance estate, the financial trap I had set began to spring. The Minnesota Department of Revenue, acting on the forensic audit files Clara and I had submitted, issued formal freeze orders on all bank accounts associated with L&V Holdings LLC and Vance Enterprises.

In a single afternoon, Ethan and Lorraine lost access to over $3 million in credit lines. The bank initiated immediate foreclosure proceedings against Lorraine’s Ridgeview Drive estate, and three major commercial contractors filed lawsuits against Ethan for unpaid materials.

They were ruined. And they knew exactly who had done it.

It was a rainy Tuesday night in late November. I was inside my downtown condo, working late on a blueprinted design for a new civic library project. The floor-to-ceiling windows showed the twinkling lights of the Minneapolis skyline reflecting off the wet pavement fourteen stories below.

Around 10:30 PM, my phone rang. It was the building’s front desk concierge, Marcus.

“Ms. Lin,” Marcus said, his voice tense. “Mr. Vance is down here in the lobby. He’s extremely intoxicated, and he’s demanding to come up to your unit. He says he has legal papers to serve you.”

My blood ran cold for a second, but my training kicked in instantly.

“Marcus, do not let him up under any circumstances,” I said firmly. “I have an active order of protection against him. Calling the police immediately is a felony violation of his bail conditions.”

“I’ve already called them, ma’am, but he’s heading toward the private service elevators—!”

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The sound of heavy, frantic pounding echoed from my front hallway door.

Ethan had bypassed the lobby security by taking the building's parking garage stairwell.

“MAYA! OPEN THIS DOOR!” Ethan screamed from the hallway, his voice raspy, slurred, and terrifyingly unhinged. “OPEN THE DOOR, YOU TRAITOROUS BITCH!”

I calmly walked to my kitchen counter, picked up my phone, and initiated a video recording while simultaneously dialing 911 on speaker.

“MAYA! YOU DESTROYED MY LIFE!” Ethan shrieked, kicking the heavy reinforced oak door with his heavy boots. CRACK! The wood groaned around the deadbolt, but held fast. “MY MOTHER LOST HER HOUSE TODAY! THE BANK TOOK EVERYTHING! OPEN THIS DOOR OR I SWEAR TO GOD I’LL BURN THIS ENTIRE BUILDING DOWN!”

“Ethan Vance is at my apartment door at 401 Marquette Avenue,” I spoke into the 911 call, keeping my voice steady. “He is breaching a felony protection order, threatening arson, and attempting to kick down my front door. I am recording his voice and actions right now.”

Outside, Ethan continued kicking the door, screaming obscenities, entirely unaware that every thump, every kick, and every death threat was being transmitted live to the 911 dispatch unit and saved to my cloud drive.

“You think you’re so smart with your architecture degree and your stupid little apartment?!” Ethan howled, slamming his shoulder against the wood. “You belonged to me! Everything you have belonged to my family! I should have killed you with that plate!”

“POLICE! FREEZE! GET ON THE GROUND NOW!”

The loud, authoritative commands of four armed police officers echoed through the hallway outside my door.

I heard the sound of a scuffle, Ethan cursing incoherently, and then the heavy thud of a body being brought forcefully down onto the hallway carpet.

“Taser deployed! Secure his hands!” an officer shouted.

A second later, a loud buzzing sound cut through the air, followed by Ethan’s high-pitched scream of agonizing defeat.

I walked to the peephole of my front door. Through the tiny lens, I watched three officers pin Ethan to the floor, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists. He was crying now, tears mixing with sweat and rain, sobbing uncontrollably as he realized what he had just done.

By breaching a protection order while intoxicated, making terroristic threats, and attempting forced entry, Ethan had just revoked his own bail.

He wasn't going home tonight. He was going straight to county jail to await trial from behind bars.
