Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Showdown

Three months later.

I was six and a half months pregnant, my baby bump now clearly defined beneath a tailored navy-blue maternity suit. I walked into the Frank Crowley Courts Building in downtown Dallas, flanked by Marcus Vance and my security team.

Today was the criminal preliminary hearing and civil injunction trial combined—a massive legal confrontation that would determine the criminal indictments against Patricia and Ethan, as well as my permanent protective order.

The courtroom was packed. Local media reporters sat in the back rows, drawn by the viral publicity of the "PR CEO Extortion Case."

Patricia sat at the defense table wearing a dark, oversized dress, trying to project the image of a fragile, elderly mother. Ethan sat next to her in a grey suit, looking gaunt and pale, his eyes hollowed out by months of legal stress and the collapse of his business.

Judge Helen Miller, a stern woman in her late 50s with sharp grey eyes, called the court to order.

"We are here in the matter of the State of Texas v. Patricia Bennett and Ethan Bennett, as well as the civil protective petition filed by Maya Lin," Judge Miller stated. "Defense counsel, you may present your argument against the grand jury indictment."

Patricia's defense attorney, a pompous man named Bradley Thorne, stood up.

"Your Honor, this entire case is a tragic escalation of a typical family wedding dispute," Thorne argued smoothly. "My client, Mrs. Patricia Bennett, was simply experiencing high stress regarding wedding preparations. Mr. Ethan Bennett was merely attempting to mediate between his stressed fiancée and his mother. The alleged 'confinement' was a brief misunderstanding, and the physical contact was completely accidental. Miss Lin is using her massive public relations agency to vilify an innocent family and ruin their livelihoods."

Judge Miller leaned forward. "Accidental physical contact that left documented deep tissue bruising on a pregnant woman, Mr. Thorne?"

"Miss Lin was hysterical, Your Honor!" Patricia blurted out from the table, unable to contain herself. "She kicked my son! She broke his knee!"

Judge Miller slammed her gavel down with a crack that echoed off the high ceilings.

"Silence at the defense table, Mrs. Bennett, or I will have you held in contempt immediately!" Judge Miller warned sternly.

Marcus Vance stood up for our side.

"Your Honor, we don't need rhetoric. We have evidence," Marcus said calmly. He plugged a USB drive into the court's AV system. "We offer State's Exhibit A: the complete, unedited audio recording captured by the victim's smartwatch, along with forensic financial records proving systematic extortion motives."

The courtroom went dead silent as the audio played through the surround-sound speakers.

Patricia’s shrill voice filled the room: "Give me your ATM card and PIN! If you won't pay willingly, we'll handle it ourselves!"

Then the sound of Ethan's voice: "We're about to become family, and you're still being selfish."

Then the sickening thud of my body hitting the drywall, followed by Patricia's sneer: "A pregnant woman should be grateful a respectable man even wants her!"

As the recording played, several jury pool members and spectators gasped. Ethan lowered his head into his hands, unable to look up. Patricia sat red-faced, her fists clenched so tightly her knuckles turned white.

"Furthermore, Your Honor," Marcus continued, presenting documented evidence, "we have uncovered that Mrs. Bennett was facing immediate foreclosure and possessed over $250,000 in unregistered gambling debts, while Mr. Bennett was facing corporate fraud charges at Aether Tech. This was not a wedding argument. This was a premeditated, desperate attempt to extort liquid capital from a pregnant woman under physical duress."

Judge Miller spent ten minutes reviewing the physical evidence, police reports, and financial audits. When she raised her head, her expression was cold as marble.

"The evidence presented is overwhelming and deeply disturbing," Judge Miller announced. "The court finds probable cause for all criminal charges."

She turned her gaze directly toward the defense table.

"Patricia Bennett, you are hereby formally indicted on counts of Felony False Imprisonment, Attempted Robbery, and Aggravated Assault on a Pregnant Individual. Due to your attempt to violate bail conditions by harassing the victim at her residence, your bail is hereby revoked. You will be remanded to the Dallas County Jail pending trial."

Patricia shrieked as bailiffs immediately stepped forward, pulling her arms behind her back to cuff her. "Ethan! Do something! Help me!" she screamed, flailing against the guards as she was dragged out through the side doors.

Judge Miller then turned to Ethan.

"Ethan Bennett, you are formally indicted on counts of Felony False Imprisonment and Criminal Coercion. Furthermore, the court grants a permanent, lifetime Restraining and Protective Order in favor of Maya Lin and her unborn child. You are forbidden from coming within 1,000 feet of Miss Lin, her residence, her place of business, or any childcare facility she registers."

Ethan looked at me across the courtroom aisle. His eyes were filled with tears, despair, and an unspoken plea for forgiveness.

I didn't look at him with anger. I didn't look at him with hatred.

May you like

I looked at him with absolute indifference.

He was no longer the man I loved. He was merely a ghost from a past I had survived.
