Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage in the CloudsA Bound ContractThe hum of the jet's twin engines vibrated through the floorboards, but inside the main cabin, the silence felt heavy enough to choke on.

Emily Carter backed up until her spine hit the leather seat behind her. Her hands were trembling, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She looked from Dominic Walker’s granite-hard face to the three bodyguards standing like monoliths near the exit door.
"What do you mean, I can't go home?" Emily’s voice was barely a whisper, a thread of sheer panic winding through it. "My flight lands in Chicago in two hours. My... my life is there."
Dominic didn't raise his voice. He reached down, carefully shifting his sleeping infant daughter—now breathing in deep, peaceful rhythms—against his broad shoulder. The contrast between his terrifying, unyielding stature and the tender way he held the baby was dizzying.
"Your life in Chicago was an empty apartment filled with ghost stories and a nursery you couldn't open, Emily," Dominic said, his deep baritone cutting through her fear with frightening precision. "I know who you are. I know about the drunk driver seven months ago. I know about your husband, David, and your twin boys, Leo and Sam."
Emily flinched as if he had struck her. Hearing her family's names spoken aloud by a man who commanded the city's dark underbelly felt like a violation. "You researched me?"
"The moment you walked toward my seat," Dominic replied smoothly, sitting down across from her and gesturing for her to take the seat opposite him. "My men ran your face through our facial recognition database before you even crossed the aisle. You are grieving. You are alone. And most importantly... you are the only reason my daughter, Maya, is breathing right now."
"I did what any human being would do!" Emily cried out, tears pricking her eyes. "You don't get to kidnap me for it!"
"It isn't a kidnapping," Dominic corrected calmly, leaning forward, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute, hypnotic intensity. "It is a necessity. Maya's mother died during childbirth three weeks ago. Her enemies—my enemies—poisoned her milk formula at the hospital. Maya has rejected every synthetic formula, every donor bank, every wet nurse my team brought to her for the past four days. Her body was shutting down. You saw it. You felt it."
Emily looked down at her hands. She still felt the phantom warmth of little Maya’s weight against her chest. The ache in her bosom had subsided, replaced by a quiet, profound biological connection that made her throat tighten.
"If I let you walk off this plane in Chicago," Dominic continued, his voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute reality, "Maya will starve within forty-eight hours. She chose you, Emily. She survived because of you. I am a man of many sins, but I will not allow my daughter to die to preserve your routine."
"You can't just buy or force a mother!" Emily snapped, a flash of her old fire breaking through her grief.
"I am not buying you, and I am not asking for your servitude," Dominic said. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a thick document bound in dark leather, placing it on the polished mahogany table between them. "This is a contract. You will live at my estate in upstate New York. You will have full access to medical care, security, and a salary of five million dollars a year. You will nurse Maya until she is healthy and weaned. In exchange, I will guarantee your absolute safety from the people who destroyed your husband's business."
Emily froze. Her breath caught in her throat. "What... what did you just say?"
Dominic leaned back, folding his long fingers together. "You thought your husband’s car crash was an accident, didn't you? A drunk driver running a red light?"
"It was an accident," Emily whispered, though a dark, icy terror began to spread through her blood.
"The driver was a low-level enforcer for the Marcone family," Dominic revealed, his voice steady as a surgeon's scalpel. "David was an auditor for the city. He found an offshore account belonging to Marco Marcone. Your family wasn't collateral damage, Emily. They were erased. And the only reason you were left alive was because Marcone thought you were too broken to look deeper."
Emily felt the cabin tilt around her. The air vanished from her lungs. For seven months, she had blamed cruel fate, bad timing, and a reckless driver. She had spent every night torturing herself with what-ifs.
"You're lying," she choked out.
"I don't lie," Dominic said coldly. "If you go back to Chicago, Marcone’s men will realize you survived your grief, and they will finish the job. If you come with me, you save my daughter's life, and I give you the power to pull Marcone's empire down to the dirt."
Emily looked at the leather contract on the table. She looked at the sleeping baby girl in Dominic’s arms, whose tiny hand was curled into a fist against his dark lapel.
She had left Chicago to run away from her life. She had boarded this plane expecting to fade into nothingness. Instead, she had walked straight into a war—and the only weapon she had was the milk meant for the sons she had lost.
"If I sign..." Emily’s voice trembled, her hazel eyes meeting Dominic's dark, dangerous gaze. "I am not your property. I am Maya's mother figure for as long as she needs me. You treat me with respect."

A faint, almost imperceptible shadow of a smile touched Dominic’s lips. "Agreed, Mrs. Carter."
Emily took the pen. With a hand that shook until the tip touched the paper, she signed her name, binding her fate to the most dangerous man in the country.
