Chapter 1 - The Midnight Audit

The neon sign of the Apex Property Solutions headquarters glowed a cold, unforgiving blue against the heavy midnight snowfall. Inside the towering downtown glass-and-steel monolith, the executive floor was entirely silent. The only sound was the rhythmic tapping of my knuckles against the polished mahogany surface of my private desk—a desk that none of my wife’s relatives even knew existed, let alone that it belonged to me.

For eight years, I had played a character.

To Frank, Susan, Isabella, and the rest of the clan, I was Nicholas the handyman—the quiet, unassuming guy who drove a dented Ford pickup, wore frayed Carhartt jackets, and spent his weekends fixing clogged drains and patching drywall. They looked down on me with a collective, sneering pity, treating me like a piece of inherited furniture they were forced to keep around because Isabella had made a poor choice in her youth.

They had no idea that the dented truck was just a decoy I used when visiting field sites, or that the "modest handyman gig" they mocked was actually the frontline operation of a multi-million-dollar empire I had built from the ground up before I even met Isabella.

Apex Property Solutions wasn't just a local maintenance outfit anymore. It managed commercial real estate portfolios across three states, brought in $16.9 million in annual revenue, and employed over three hundred people.

And right at the top of that payroll, nestled comfortably in bloated, non-job-describing executive positions, were forty-seven members of Isabella’s family.

Cousins who showed up at noon and left by two. Brothers-in-law who held titles like "Senior Vice President of Regional Synergy" while spending their days playing golf on company-issued credit cards. Frank, who collected a quarter-million-dollar salary as a "Senior Consultant" despite not opening a spreadsheet since the nineties.

I had allowed it. Out of love for Isabella, out of a desire for domestic peace, and out of a foolish belief that shielding them from reality would keep my home stable, I had kept my mouth shut. Every month, millions of dollars in corporate profits flowed from my accounts to fund their country club memberships, luxury European vacations, and gated-community mortgages.

Then came tonight.

Then came Mackenzie standing on that freezing porch in the snow, shivering in a thin sweater, while Frank laughed and Isabella handed me divorce papers like I was trash being swept off a doorstep.

"Go live with your loser father," Frank had sneered.

The numbness in my chest had evaporated, replaced by a cold, surgical clarity.

I sat down at my primary executive terminal, placed my biometric security key into the USB port, and entered my master encryption passphrase. The dual monitors flared to life, illuminating my face in a sharp, fluorescent white glow.

Welcome, Administrator: Nicholas Vance, Founder & CEO.

I didn't hesitate. I opened the human resources and payroll master database.

First, I pulled up the roster of the forty-seven relatives. I looked at their job descriptions, their attendance logs, and their compensation packages. The sheer scale of the parasitism was staggering. Millions of dollars siphoned away from hardworking field technicians and operations staff to line the pockets of people who wouldn't know a hard day's work if it bit them.

With a few keystrokes, I initiated the mass-processing protocol.

Action: Immediate Termination Without Severance. Reason: Breach of Corporate Conduct, Fraudulent Payroll Allocation, and Restructuring.

Next, I targeted their perks. I transmitted an automated override command to our corporate fleet management system, disabling the ignition transponders on all forty-seven company-leased luxury vehicles currently parked in their suburban driveways. I locked down their corporate expense accounts, froze their health insurance riders pending formal audit, and revoked every single security badge linked to any Apex facility across the tri-state area.

Finally, I drafted the termination letter. It was concise, professional, and brutal in its finality. It didn't offer explanations. It simply stated that effective immediately, their employment with Apex Property Solutions was terminated, their access revoked, and legal counsel had been instructed to review all past compensation disbursements for potential recovery actions.

As my finger hovered over the enter key to dispatch the letters simultaneously to their personal emails, corporate inboxes, and cell phones, I thought of Mackenzie sleeping peacefully in her bed upstairs, wrapped in my heavy wool blanket.

I pressed down.

Forty-seven emails flew into the digital ether.

The purge had begun. And by Monday morning, forty-seven pampered parasites were about to discover what life actually looked like when the man they mocked stopped paying their bills.
