Chapter 2 - The Facade CrumblesThe heavy oak doors of the Bel-Air estate swung open without a sound.

Inside the grand morning room, Chloe was pacing the floor, barking orders into her phone while two private security contractors stood awkwardly near the service corridor. Marisol stood beside the children’s study area, her arms wrapped around Valeria and Sofia. Sofia was trembling, her tear-stained face pressed into the fabric of Marisol’s uniform apron.
“I don’t care if she doesn’t want to pack,” Chloe shouted at the contractors. “Physically escort her past the gates, or I’ll have both of your licenses revoked by sundown!”
“They won't be touching anyone, Chloe.”
The voice was neither loud nor hurried, but it severed the room’s tension instantly.
Chloe froze. Her phone slowly lowered from her ear. She spun around, her eyes widening as Alexander walked into the foyer, completely unhurried, carrying his leather travel briefcase.
“Alexander?” Her voice shifted from sharp venom to breathy innocence in less than two seconds. “Darling... what are you doing here? Did your flight get canceled? You're supposed to be in Toronto.”
Alexander did not look at her. His gaze moved past her shoulder, locking onto his two daughters.
The moment Sofia saw his face, she let out a strangled gasp. “Daddy?”
Valeria didn't move. She remained rigidly positioned in front of her sister, her eyes wide with disbelief, as if trying to determine whether her father was real or another cruel projection designed to test her compliance.
“Valeria. Sofia,” Alexander said, his voice dropping into a soft, steady register. “Come here.”
Valeria took one hesitant step forward, then broke into a sprint. Sofia followed, her small shoes sliding against the polished parquet floor. Alexander dropped his briefcase, sank to both knees, and caught both girls in his arms. The force of their impact hit him directly in the chest, Sofia’s tiny arms locking around his neck with desperate, suffocating strength.
“I’m sorry, Daddy,” Sofia sobbed into his collar, her voice muffled by his lapel. “I didn't mean to leave my bunny on the floor. I'm sorry, please don't let her take it away.”
Alexander held them tightly, burying his face in Sofia’s hair, feeling the fragile, rapid beating of her heart. Over their shoulders, he met Marisol’s eyes. The housekeeper stood tall, her hands trembling slightly, but her face was calm, marked by profound relief.
“You did nothing wrong, sweetheart,” Alexander whispered into Sofia’s ear. “Neither of you. Daddy is home. Daddy is never leaving you alone in this house again.”
He stood up slowly, lifting Sofia in his left arm while keeping his right hand firmly clasped around Valeria’s fingers. When he finally turned to face Chloe, all warmth vanished from his features.
Chloe stepped forward, her hands outstretched in performative distress. “Alexander, thank God you came back. It was horrific. Marisol completely lost her temper. She attacked me right here in front of the children because I asked her to tidy up the living area. I had to call private security to protect the girls.”
The two private security guards looked uncomfortably at each other.
“Did she attack you, Chloe?” Alexander asked calmly.
“Look at my wrist!” She pushed up her silk sleeve, revealing faint pink skin. “She grabbed me. She threatened me. She said that as long as she was in this house, I would never be their mother. Alexander, she is completely unhinged. She’s been stealing from us, and now she’s turned violent.”
Alexander nodded slowly. “And Sofia’s stuffed rabbit? Did Marisol throw that onto the top display shelf as well?”
Chloe’s breath hitched. Her eyes darted toward the bookshelf, where the worn stuffed animal sat ten feet above the floor. “The... the girls were misbehaving. They need structure, Alexander. You travel constantly, and you don’t see how undisciplined they’ve become under this woman's influence. I was merely establishing boundaries.”
“Hector,” Alexander called out without raising his voice.
The heavy library doors opened. Hector stepped into the morning room carrying an industrial tablet connected to the estate’s internal network. Behind him, two armed members of Alexander’s personal executive protection unit flanked the hallway.
“Play the morning room feed from 9:14 AM,” Alexander commanded. “Put the audio on the room speakers.”
Chloe’s face drained of color. “What... what feed?”
Hector tapped the glass screen. Instantly, Chloe’s sharp, cruel voice echoed through the high ceilings of the room:
“How many times do I have to tell you brats that I don't want you lounging around in the main living room? ... When your father isn't here, what I say goes in this house. ... He brought me into his life to manage his family because your little dead mistress couldn't survive long enough to finish the job.”
The room fell into absolute silence, broken only by Sofia’s soft, hitching breaths against Alexander’s shoulder.
Chloe backed away until her spine met the grand piano. “Alexander... that was taken out of context. I was frustrated. I’ve been under immense stress trying to manage your schedule and prepare for the wedding—”
“There is no wedding,” Alexander said.
The words fell like lead weights.
“You can’t do this,” Chloe stammered, her voice cracking as the realization dawned on her. “We have an executed agreement. Our families are intertwined. Julian Davenport and I—”
“Julian Davenport is currently being detained at his downtown office by federal forensic investigators,” a new voice announced from the entryway.
Arthur Pendelton, Alexander’s chief legal counsel for over twenty years, entered the room holding a leather portfolio. “Good morning, Miss Montgomery. Or should I address you as the managing director of Cima Strategic Holdings, the dummy corporation you and Mr. Davenport established to siphon capital from the Eleanor Vance Memorial Trust?”
Chloe pressed her hands against the piano keys, causing a discordant cluster of notes to ring out across the hall. Her pristine veneer evaporated completely, replaced by raw, frantic malice. “You think you’ve won, Alexander? You think you can just discard me like domestic help? My father sits on the board of your primary creditor bank. I know every vulnerability in your supply chain. I will tear your company apart in the press before your daughters even finish the school year.”
Alexander looked down at Valeria, gently squeezing her hand. Then he looked at Hector.
“Remove her from my sight,” Alexander said quietly. “Have the local precinct take her into custody at the front gates for child endangerment, assault, and corporate fraud. If she takes one step toward my daughters, handle it accordingly.”
“Understood, sir,” Hector said, stepping forward with his team.
As the guards escorted a screaming, struggling Chloe down the gallery, Alexander walked over to the high display shelf. Reaching up, he retrieved Sofia’s worn stuffed rabbit. He brushed the dust from its ears and placed it gently into Sofia’s hands.
The little girl buried her face in the soft fabric, sobbing quietly in relief.
Alexander turned to Marisol, his eyes dark with remorse. “Marisol.”
“Mr. Vance,” she whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears.

“I am so sorry,” Alexander said, his voice thick with emotion. “For not seeing. For not listening to what my daughters couldn't tell me.”
Marisol looked at Valeria and Sofia, offering a gentle, reassuring smile. “You came back, Mr. Vance. That is all that matters.”
