Chapter 4 - The War RoomAssembling the TrapTwo hours later, I sat wrapped in three heavy wool blankets beside Marcus’s stone fireplace, a steaming mug of black coffee held between my bandaged hands. My feet were cleaned and wrapped, and my wet nightgown had been replaced by one of Marcus’s oversized flannel shirts.

On the dining table between us lay the contents of my father's micro-SD card, plugged into Marcus’s air-gapped, encrypted laptop.

"Your father wasn't stupid, Clara," Marcus said, scrolling through hundreds of pages of financial logs, bank records, and legal trusts. "He suspected Daniel from the moment you brought him home four years ago."

I stared at the screen, tears welling in my eyes. "Why didn't Dad tell me?"

"Because Daniel was a master manipulator," Marcus replied dryly, pointing at a series of transactions highlighted in red. "Look at this. Daniel’s former real estate firm didn't go bankrupt because of 'market downturns.' He was investigated for wire fraud in Chicago five years ago. He changed his middle name, moved to this county, and targeted you six months after your father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer."

My blood ran cold. "It was all planned? From the very beginning?"

"Every single second of it," Marcus confirmed. "He courted you while you were grieving. He isolated you from me, from your friends at the hospital, and from your father’s legal team. Then he brought his sister Rachel in as the 'financial adviser' to manage your trust."

Marcus leaned back in his chair, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line.

"And now they’ve crossed the line into felony drugging, medical fraud, and attempted abduction."

"We have to go to the police," I said, my voice shaking.

"Not yet," Marcus answered coldly. "The local sheriff, Sheriff Miller, is Daniel’s golf partner. If we walk into the precinct right now with just your word against his, Daniel will produce Dr. Evans’s medical reports claiming you had a psychotic break and fled into the woods in a state of delirium. They’ll hand you right back to him under an emergency psychiatric hold."

"Then what do we do?" I asked, desperation creeping back into my voice.

Marcus pulled a legal pad toward him and uncapped a pen. A faint, wolfish smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"We let them think their plan worked," Marcus said. "By noon tomorrow, Daniel and Rachel have a meeting at the county courthouse with Judge Hargrove to execute the fraudulent power of attorney. They think you’re lost in the woods, freezing to death or hiding."

"They'll be looking for my body," I realized, a shudder passing through me.

"Precisely," Marcus said. "So we give them a show. But while they're sitting in that courtroom, waiting to sign away your life... we are going to burn their trap to the ground."

He looked at me, his sharp eyes flashing with the same unyielding fire my father had possessed.

"Are you ready to play the game, Clara?"

May you like

I took a slow sip of the hot coffee, looking down at my hands. The trembling had stopped. The fear was gone.

"Tell me what to do," I said quietly.
