Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Battle

The atmosphere in the executive boardroom was thick with tension, the air smelling of stale coffee and expensive cologne. Twelve of the most powerful investors in the state sat around the massive mahogany table, their faces grim as they stared at their tablets, which were filled with breaking news articles about Vanessa’s arrest.

As I walked in, flanked by Rebecca, the room fell into a tense, hostile silence.

"Daniel," Arthur Pendelton, the senior board member and a long-time ally of my father, spoke up, his voice heavy with disapproval. "This is a disaster. The stock price of Valeon Technologies has already dropped four percent since the market opened. The media is painting this as a toxic household, and by extension, a toxic company. We cannot have the CEO of a multi-billion-dollar tech giant embroiled in a brutal, public domestic abuse trial."

"Then I suggest you stop reading the gossip columns, Arthur," I said, taking my seat at the head of the table.

"Don't be glib, Daniel!" another board member, a wealthy venture capitalist named Gregory, snapped. "Your wife was arrested for beating your bedridden mother! It’s barbaric! The public relations nightmare alone will destroy our upcoming launch of the Valeon-V medical operating system. The healthcare sector will never trust a company whose founder can’t even secure the safety of his own mother in his own home!"

I leaned forward, resting my forearms on the polished mahogany table, my gaze locking onto Gregory’s eyes until he looked away.

"You're right, Gregory," I said, my voice incredibly calm, yet holding a razor-sharp edge. "It is barbaric. And that is exactly why I called the police myself. I didn't hide it. I didn't pay off the media. I didn't try to sweep it under the rug to protect our stock price."

"But the scandal—" Arthur began.

"The scandal will pass," I interrupted. "Because tomorrow morning, Valeon Technologies will announce a fifty-million-dollar endowment to found the Margaret Vale Institute for Elder Protection and Care. We will fund independent, non-profit legal and medical advocacy groups across the country to ensure that no elderly person is ever subjected to the kind of abuse my mother endured."

The board members looked at each other, their anger slowly transforming into surprise.

"A fifty-million-dollar endowment?" Gregory muttered. "That's a massive capital expenditure, Daniel. The shareholders—"

"The shareholders will see that the CEO of Valeon doesn't just manage profit margins; he leads with a moral compass," I said. "And for those of you who are worried about my personal stability... my marriage is over. The divorce papers have been filed on grounds of extreme cruelty and financial fraud. Vanessa will not receive a single dollar of Valeon stock, nor will she ever have access to the trust."

Rebecca stood up, distributing a set of documents to each board member. "These are the copies of the criminal complaints and the forensic financial reports. As you can see, Vanessa’s actions were entirely independent, and she was actively embezzling funds from the household to support her family's failing business ventures. The company’s assets are entirely secure."

Arthur looked down at the paperwork, then raised his eyes to meet mine. The hostility in his face had vanished, replaced by a deep, grudging respect.

"You handled this like your father would have, Daniel," Arthur said quietly. "You didn't flinch. You did what was right, regardless of the cost."

"The cost of my mother's safety is limitless, Arthur," I said, standing up. "Now, if there are no further questions, I have a hospital to visit."
