Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Evidences

The rain began to fall as twilight settled over the Silver Lake district, turning the snow banks along the road into a gray, slushy mess. Downstairs in the living room, the atmosphere was thick with a tense, terrified silence. The mahogany coffin had been removed by the military authorities an hour prior, leaving a large, empty square in the middle of the room where the rug had been trampled by combat boots.

Margaret sat on the sofa, her hands trembling as she tried to light a cigarette, her aristocratic composure completely shattered. Caleb stood by the window, his phone pressed to his ear, his face pale as he listened to a continuous busy signal from his attorney's office.

"They aren't answering, Mother," Caleb hissed, slamming the phone down onto the glass coffee table. "The firm's corporate line is dead. My primary accountant just texted me saying the federal marshals are currently packing up the servers at our main office downtown."

"Shut up, Caleb," Margaret snapped, her voice cracking with a high-pitched panic she could no longer control. "Daniel doesn't know anything. He has a memory card, yes, but it’s just video of an argument. It doesn't prove anything about the medical complications. Dr. Harrison’s paperwork is legally binding. As long as the clinic record stands, they can't prove criminal negligence."

The front door swung open with a heavy, definitive thud.

I stepped into the room, my uniform jacket removed, revealing the black tactical shirt and the heavy service belt beneath. Behind me walked Major Rebecca Hayes and Special Agent Miller from the Army Criminal Investigation Division, carrying a stack of red-stamped federal seizure orders.

"The clinic record doesn't stand, Margaret," I said, stepping into the center of the room, my voice flat and cold.

Caleb lunged forward, his face twisted into a snarl of desperate arrogance. "You can't just walk into this house with military police, Daniel! This is a civilian jurisdiction! I’ve already called the county sheriff; he’s a personal friend of mine, and he’s on his way right now to remove these people from my property!"

"This isn't your property, Caleb," Major Hayes said, stepping forward and placing a certified copy of the land registry directly on the table. "As of 0600 hours this morning, the United States District Court has issued an absolute asset freeze on all holdings associated with Bennett Development Group. Because your corporate funds were directly commingled with stolen military trust assets, this entire estate is now under federal receivership."

Special Agent Miller pulled a small, digital recording device from his pocket and pressed play.

Dr. Harrison’s voice filled the living room, sounding high-pitched, terrified, and completely broken. “I didn't have a choice! Caleb Bennett threatened to expose my private debt ledger to the state medical board if I didn't sign the home-birth fatality form! Emily didn't die of a natural heart failure! She went into premature labor because they cut off the power to the house's heating system during the storm to force her out, and when she collapsed, they waited three hours to call an unlisted private ambulance service! By the time they brought her to my clinic, she had already passed from internal hemorrhaging! I just signed what they told me to sign!”

Margaret dropped her cigarette onto the rug, her eyes wide and blank as she stared at the recording device. She sank back into the sofa cushions, her hands flying to her mouth as her breath came in ragged, terrified gasps.

"You... you went to Harrison," she whispered, looking up at me like I was a monster that had crawled out of the dark.

"I didn't go to him, Mother," I said, leaning down until I was inches from her face, my eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unyielding intensity. "The military intelligence network mapped his accounts forty-eight hours before I even boarded the transport plane out of the combat zone. We knew about every dollar Caleb transferred to his offshore ledger, we knew about the forged signatures, and we knew exactly how you treated my wife while I was away protecting this family."

I turned to Special Agent Miller. "Execute the domestic arrest warrants. Let the county authorities know the federal government has taken primary jurisdiction over the homicide investigation."

As the military police officers stepped forward, clicking the heavy steel handcuffs around Caleb’s wrists, my brother began to shriek, his face turning a dark, panicked purple as he kicked at the furniture. "You're destroying the family, Daniel! You're putting your own mother in a cell! You're a traitor to this name!"

"The family name was destroyed the second you let my wife's hand grow cold in that coffin, Caleb," I said quietly, turning my back on them as they were led out into the pouring rain.
