Chapter 3 - Breaking the Silence

By Wednesday, news of the Cole family's arrest had turned Chicago’s legal and financial circles upside down.

The scandal was featured on every major news network: "CHICAGO BILLIONAIRE AND GOLDEN-BOY SON INDICTED ON RICO AND BATTERY CHARGES."

While Richard and Evan sat in solitary holding cells at the Metropolitan Correctional Center downtown—their high-priced legal team frantically filing bail petitions that were repeatedly denied by federal judges—I set up an operational headquarters in my old apartment near Lincoln Park.

Sitting around my dining table were Victoria Chen, Special Agent Mercer, and two young women who had arrived from out of state under federal witness protection shields.

The first woman was Chloe Adams, twenty-six, a former interior designer from Milwaukee. The second was Sarah Jenkins, twenty-eight, an architect from Boston.

Both women were pale, quiet, and wore long-sleeved sweaters despite the warm room.

“Thank you both for coming,” I said, setting fresh water glasses before them.

Chloe looked at Lily, who was sitting beside me holding a notebook.

“When I saw the news report about the church arrest on Monday,” Chloe said, her voice shaking slightly, “I cried for two hours. I thought I was the only one.”

Sarah reached across the table and squeezed Chloe’s hand. “You weren't. I dated Evan four years ago when he was managing Cole Enterprises’ East Coast office.”

Victoria Chen leaned forward, opening her recorder. “Chloe, Sarah... for the federal record, can you describe what happened during your relationships with Evan Cole?”

Chloe took a deep, shaky breath.

“Evan was charming at first,” Chloe began, her eyes staring into the past. “He bought flowers, took me to expensive dinners, paid for trips. But after six months, the possessiveness started. If I answered a phone call too slowly, he would snap. If I wore a dress he didn't approve of, he would lock me in his apartment for days.”

She looked down at her hands.

“When I finally tried to leave him,” Chloe whispered, “he attacked me in his penthouse. He used his heavy leather belt... he marked my back so badly I couldn't sit up for three weeks.”

Lily gasped, covering her mouth as fresh tears welled in her eyes. The exact same method. The exact same cruelty.

“What happened when you went to the police, Chloe?” Agent Mercer asked gently.

“I didn't get the chance,” Chloe replied with a bitter, hollow laugh. “The next morning, Richard Cole’s private head of security showed up at my apartment with two corporate lawyers. They handed me an envelope containing fifty thousand dollars in cash and a legal Non-Disclosure Agreement.”

She pulled a yellowed, creased legal document from her handbag and laid it on the table.

“They told me that if I said a single word to the police, to my family, or to a doctor, they would sue me for defamation, ruin my father’s small business, and make sure I was blacklisted from every design firm in the Midwest. They spent two years watching my social media, sending private investigators to stand outside my apartment building just to remind me they owned me.”

Sarah Jenkins nodded grimly. “They did the exact same thing to me in Boston. Richard Cole had a system. Evan was a violent, narcissistic monster, and his father used his legal network like a private cleanup crew to erase his son’s crimes.”

Victoria Chen looked at me, a sharp, fierce flame igniting in her eyes.

“Under the federal Victims of Human Trafficking and Violence Protection Act,” Victoria declared, taking Chloe’s signed NDA and tearing it cleanly in half, “any non-disclosure agreement used to conceal a felony crime of violence or extortion is completely null, void, and criminally unenforceable. These papers aren't legal contracts anymore, ladies. They are exhibit A and exhibit B in a federal indictment.”

Lily stood up from her chair, walked around the table, and wrapped her arms tightly around both Chloe and Sarah.

“You’re safe now,” Lily whispered, her voice filled with a fierce, newfound strength. “None of us are going to hide in the dark anymore. We are going to make sure they never hurt another woman for as long as they live.”

For the next three hours, the room was filled with the quiet, determined sound of three brave women recording their official sworn depositions—depositions that would dismantle the myth of Evan Cole forever.
