Chapter 4 - The Snake Strikes Back

Power, however, never exists in a vacuum.

While the Sterling Foundation launched its first major initiative in Chicago, ripples of tension were spreading through the Midwest underworld. Dominic Vance’s arrest had left a massive power vacuum, and his brother, Marcus Vance, was determined to take over the syndicate.

Unlike Dominic, Marcus Vance was reckless, volatile, and desperate. He blamed Victor Sterling for his brother's downfall and knew that the only way to save their organization from total collapse was to strike a blow that would force Victor to pull back his pressure.

The opportunity came during the annual Sterling Autumn Gala at the Field Museum—a massive, high-society event celebrating the launch of my new protective shelter initiative.

The Grand Hall of the museum was magnificent, bathed in golden light, filled with Chicago’s elite, politicians, business moguls, and philanthropists. I wore an emerald-green floor-length gown, my hair styled in soft waves that brushed against my shoulders. For the first time, I stood proudly at my father's side as Emily Sterling.

"You look breathtaking, daughter," Victor said, his eyes glowing with pride as he raised his champagne glass.

"I learned from the best," I smiled.

Across the room, Julian stood near the marble pillars, wearing a flawless black tuxedo. His eyes rarely left me, sweeping the crowd with professional vigilance, but every time our eyes met, a subtle, electric warmth passed between us.

At 9:30 p.m., the music swelled as I stepped onto the stage to deliver my keynote address.

"For a long time, I believed that silence was safety," I spoke into the microphone, my voice echoing clearly through the grand hall. "I believed that if I stayed small, if I stayed quiet, the danger would pass. But silence is what abusers feed on. Today, we break that silence."

The room erupted into thunderous applause.

As I stepped off the stage, Julian suddenly moved toward me, his hand reaching for his earpiece. His expression shifted instantly from warmth to lethal focus.

"Emily, move to the east exit now," Julian whispered calmly, taking my elbow.

"What's happening?" I asked under my breath.

"Perimeter breach. Two security guards at the service entrance just went dark," Julian said quietly. "Marcus Vance’s men are inside the building."

Before we could reach the heavy oak doors leading to the private offices, the lights in the Grand Hall flickered and died, plunging the massive room into darkness. Screams erupted instantly from the wealthy guests as panic set in.

Red emergency lights flashed on.

Three men in dark clothing stepped through the service corridor, pulling silenced sidearms from beneath their jackets. The lead gunman locked eyes with me. "There she is! Grab the girl!"

In the old days, I would have frozen. I would have collapsed to my knees, waiting for the blow to hit.

Not tonight.

"Julian, behind the pillar!" I called out, pulling my gown's train over my arm.

Julian drew his sidearm with lightning speed, firing two precise shots that took down the lead gunman before he could raise his weapon. The other two attackers scrambled for cover behind a marble display case, returning fire.

"Vincenzo has your father secured in the vault," Julian said, pressing his back against the marble column beside me. "They came for you as leverage."

"They picked the wrong night," I said through gritted teeth.

I glanced around the display area. Mounted on a heavy wooden pedestal beside us was a historic bronze artifact—a heavy, three-foot replica spear.

Using the martial arts movements Julian had taught me over the past weeks, I slipped around the shadow of the column while the two gunmen were focused on Julian's suppressive fire. I lunged forward, swinging the bronze spear with all the momentum of my body, striking the second gunman across the side of his knee.

He screamed, dropping to his joint—the exact same way Tyler had fallen.

Before the third man could turn his weapon on me, Julian closed the distance, disarming him with a brutal wrist-lock and driving him into the floor.

Within ninety seconds, the breach was contained. Tactical units from Sterling Security flooded the hall, securing the remaining exits and escorting the panicked guests out into the secured courtyard.

Julian stood in the dim red emergency light, breathing heavily, his eyes wild as he checked me over. He grabbed my shoulders, his hands trembling slightly.

"Are you hurt? Did they touch you?" he demanded, his voice laced with a raw, desperate emotion he had never shown before.

"I'm fine, Julian," I breathed, looking up into his dark eyes. "I'm completely fine."

Julian stared at me, his gaze dropping to my lips, then back to my eyes. Without another word, he pulled me into his arms, cupping the back of my neck, and kissed me.

It was intense, fierce, and filled with months of unspoken devotion. I wrapped my arms around his neck, sinking into the kiss, feeling the solid, protective heat of a man who loved me not for what I could give him, but for who I was.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, he whispered, "I will never let anyone hurt you, Emily. Never."

"I know," I smiled softly. "And together, we're going to end this."
