Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a CollapseThe federal holding facility on the south side of the city smelled of ozone, bleached floors, and permanent fluorescent glare.

It was 2:00 AM, but sleep was a luxury I hadn't afforded myself since Maya’s heart stopped monitors three weeks ago. I sat at a stainless-steel interview table in Room 4B, the thick dossier of Daniel’s empire spread out before me.

The door clicked open, and Special Agent Marcus Vance stepped in, tossing a steaming paper cup of black coffee onto the table before sliding into the chair opposite me.

“The asset seizure warrants went through an hour ago,” Marcus said, leaning back and rubbing his eyes. “Every corporate account tied to Voss Real Estate has been frozen by federal order. The commercial properties in downtown Bayside, the yacht docked in Seattle, the overseas shell companies in the Caymans—all locked tight. But Daniel isn't talking.”

“He will,” I said, staring at a bank statement dated two days before Maya’s death. “A man like Daniel doesn't know how to survive without money and status. Take away his liquidity, and his loyalty network will cannibalize itself within forty-eight hours.”

“What about Celeste?” Marcus asked, pulling a transcript from his leather folio. “She broke an hour ago during her preliminary interrogation. Started pointing fingers the second she realized Daniel’s primary offshore accounts were registered under her name—which means the tax evasion charges fall squarely on her shoulders unless she cuts a deal.”

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the steel table. “What did she give us?”

“Everything,” Marcus smiled grimly, sliding the transcript across the table. “She handed over the decryption keys to Daniel’s secondary laptop. The one he kept locked in his private office safe. We decrypted it at midnight. Lena... it’s worse than we thought.”

I picked up the printed summary sheets attached to the transcript. My eyes scanned the line items, and my blood ran cold.

It wasn't just financial fraud. It wasn't just embezzlement.

For six months, while Maya was pregnant with their child—a child she had prayed for through three heartbreaking miscarriages—Daniel had been systematically liquidating her personal inheritance trust, transferring over two million dollars into high-risk offshore speculative funds to bail out his failing commercial developments.

And worse: the prenatal vitamins Maya had been taking, prescribed directly by Daniel’s close friend and personal concierge physician Dr. Gregory Hayes, contained trace amounts of a slow-acting metabolic suppressant designed to induce severe hypertension and systemic organ failure.

He hadn't just neglected her. He had systematically murdered her to collect a three-million-dollar key-man life insurance policy and clear the way for a public marriage to Celeste.

“Where is Dr. Hayes?” I asked, my voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register.

“Fled his residence twelve minutes after the arrests went live on the news,” Marcus replied, checking his watch. “Private jet filed a flight plan out of a private airstrip in Covington heading south toward the Bahamas. Federal air marshals are scrambling an intercept vector right now, but if he crosses international airspace before we ground him—”

“He won't,” I interrupted, standing up so fast my chair scraped loudly against the concrete floor. “Call the Coast Guard cutter stationed off the Florida keys. Tell them I’m exercising cross-jurisdictional federal liaison authority. Hayes doesn't leave American airspace.”

Marcus looked up at me, a flicker of professional respect in his eyes. “You’re heading down there yourself?”

“I’m not missing the catch,” I said, grabbing my tactical jacket off the back of the chair. “Daniel thought I was just the quiet sister who watched from the corner. It’s time he found out what happens when the filing cabinet strikes back.”
