Chapter 6 - The Sun After the Storm

One year later.

The private garden on the northern terrace of the DeLuca estate was draped in white silk, blooming white roses, and glowing crystal lanterns.

A warm, gentle autumn breeze blew through the ancient oak trees, carrying the sweet scent of jasmine and fresh ocean air.

Seventy-two-year-old Isabella DeLuca sat in the front row of gold velvet chairs, wearing a dark navy lace gown, her frail face radiating healthy color, tears of pure joy glistening in her dark eyes. Sitting beside her was my brother Danny—nineteen years old, wearing a sharp grey tux, standing tall and proud on his own two feet, leaning only lightly on an elegant silver-topped cane.

Soft classical violin music drifted through the air.

I walked down the white runner carpet, draped in an off-the-shoulder gown of pure ivory silk, trailing a lace veil that swept across the scattered rose petals.

Standing at the altar under an archway of white orchids was Marco DeLuca.

He took my breath away.

He wore a custom black velvet tuxedo that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding presence. His dark hair was styled impeccably, his jaw clean-shaven, but the icy, terrifying Don was completely absent.

As I reached the altar, Marco stepped forward, his eyes shining with unshed tears, taking both of my hands in his.

"You look like an angel," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

"And you look like a man who's finally found some peace," I smiled softly back.

The old priest smiled warmly at us, clearing his throat as he opened his gold-leafed scripture book.

"Friends, family," the priest began, his voice carrying over the gentle rustle of the garden leaves. "We are gathered here today to unite Marco DeLuca and Lena Carter in holy matrimony. A bond forged not merely in words, but tested in fire, proven in loyalty, and sealed in unshakeable love."

When it came time for the vows, Marco didn't read from a card. He didn't look down. He locked his dark, deep eyes onto mine, holding my hands tight in his broad, warm palms.

"Lena," Marco said, his resonant voice carrying across the silent garden. "For eleven months, two weeks, and four days... you were invisible in my house. I was blind, arrogant, and cold. I called you a nobody because I was terrified of how easily you saw through my armor."

He smiled faintly, a tear finally slipping down his handsome cheek.

"Then you bled for my mother," Marco continued softly. "You showed me what true strength looks like. You taught me that real power isn't in taking life—it's in protecting the people you love. You saved my mother’s life, Lena, but you saved my soul."

He slipped a thick, flawless platinum ring, encrusted with brilliant cut diamonds, onto my ring finger.

"I give you my heart, my life, my name, and my protection," Marco vowed, his voice steady as rock. "For as long as I draw breath on this earth."

Tears streamed down my cheeks as I picked up his gold wedding band, slipping it onto his long finger.

"Marco," I whispered, looking into the eyes of the man who had become my entire world. "I took five bullets for your mother... but I would take a thousand more for you. You gave my brother his life, you gave me a home, and you showed me that even in the darkest shadows, love can heal the deepest wounds. I am yours, Marco. Today, tomorrow, and forever."

"By the power vested in me," the priest smiled broadly, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Marco didn't wait.

He reached out, cupping the back of my head with one broad hand while wrapping his other arm securely around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest, and lifting me slightly as he brought his lips down on mine in a passionate, breathtaking kiss.

The garden erupted into thunderous applause and cheers.

Isabella clapped her frail hands together, weeping openly, while Danny let out a loud, joyous whistle from the front row.

When Marco finally pulled back, his dark eyes were bright, filled with a blinding, incredible light that I had never seen before. He tucked a stray dark lock of hair behind my ear, his thumb brushing away a stray tear from my cheek.

"Mrs. DeLuca," Marco whispered against my lips, his face radiant with pure, unadulterated happiness.

"Mr. DeLuca," I smiled, wrapping my arms around his neck, looking out over the sunlit garden, the city skyline glowing in the distance.

The shadows of the past were gone. The blood on the pavement had been washed away by the rain, replaced by a life built on courage, sacrifice, and an everlasting love.

I was no longer invisible. I was no longer a nobody.

May you like

I was home.

The End
