Chapter 3 - THE SEVERING

Monday morning arrived with a clear, icy blue sky over Denver.

While my children were eating pancakes and laughing at the kitchen table before I drove them to school, the legal machinery I had set in motion was already grinding silently into action.

At 8:30 AM, I dropped Aidan, Mia, and Harry off at their elementary school gates. I knelt down, hugged each of them tightly, and watched them walk safely inside with their backpacks bouncing against their shoulders.

"Have a great day, Dad!" Mia called back with a wave.

"I love you guys!" I called out.

Seeing them smile, seeing the color back in their cheeks, sealed my resolve completely. Whatever storm hit today, my children were protected inside a fortress of my own making.

At 9:15 AM, I arrived at my flagship restaurant, The Copper Kettle, located in the bustling heart of downtown Denver. It was a sleek, upscale establishment that served as both my primary culinary venture and the central management office for my four other café locations.

My general manager, Marcus, met me near the host station, holding an iPad and a cup of black coffee.

"Morning, Liam," Marcus said, handing me the coffee. "Weekend revenue numbers across all five locations were up fourteen percent. The investor group from Friday sent over the finalized expansion contract for the Boulder location. They're ready to sign."

"Excellent work, Marcus," I said, taking a sip of the coffee. "Have the legal docs placed on my desk. Also, effective immediately, I am updating the security roster for all five locations."

Marcus pulled out his stylus. "Who are we adding?"

"Nobody," I said. "We're issuing a standing trespass order. Stephen Mitchell, Evelyn Mitchell, and Sarah Mitchell-Hayes are barred from entering any of our properties. If any of them set foot inside the building, do not engage, do not argue. Call private security and have them escorted off the premises immediately."

Marcus froze, his eyes widening in shock. He had worked with me for six years and knew how often my parents used to come in, order expensive meals on my corporate tab, and treat the waitstaff like dirt.

"Are you sure, boss?" Marcus asked quietly.

"One hundred percent," I replied. "Let's get to work."

By 11:00 AM, the first waves of panic began to hit the Littleton house.

At that exact moment, a process server dispatched by Arthur Vance’s office pulled up to the curb of 1482 Willow Creek Lane. He walked up the stone pathway, rang the doorbell, and handed a thick, official legal packet directly to my father.

Inside the packet were four distinct legal documents:

A Formal Notice to Quit and Vacate Premises: Giving Stephen and Evelyn Mitchell exactly thirty days to surrender full possession of the property back to L.M. Legacy Properties LLC.

Revocation of Financial Guarantees: Formal notification that all utility accounts (electric, gas, water, gigabit internet, and premium cable) were being transferred back to the primary occupants' names effective immediately, with corporate automatic payments canceled.

Vehicle Repossession Notice: Demand for the immediate surrender of the 2024 Lincoln Navigator leased under Mitchell Hospitality Group, scheduled for pickup by a transport carrier on Wednesday morning.

Notice of Revocation of Supplementary Allowance: Immediate termination of the monthly $3,500 personal stipend previously transferred on the first of every month.

My personal phone was sitting flat on my desk, set to silent.

At 11:14 AM, the screen lit up.

Stephen Mitchell Calling.

Ten seconds later, it went to voicemail.

At 11:16 AM, it lit up again.

Evelyn Mitchell Calling.

By 11:30 AM, my phone was vibrating continuously. Messages began pouring in like a tidal wave.

Stephen (11:18 AM): "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS LEGAL BULLSHIT, LIAM?! ARE YOU INSANE?! CALL ME RIGHT NOW!"

Evelyn (11:22 AM): "Liam, stop this cruel joke right now! A process server just came to our door! Your father is having chest pains! How can you do this to your own mother?!"

Sarah (11:35 AM): "Liam, did you seriously fire an eviction notice at Mom and Dad?! What is wrong with you?! Where are they supposed to live?! They don't have savings for a new house!"

I picked up my phone, opened the group chat containing my parents and my sister, and typed one single message:

“All communications regarding L.M. Legacy Properties LLC or my personal financial affairs must be directed exclusively to my legal counsel, Arthur Vance of Vance & Sterling LLP. Do not contact me again.”

I then tapped the screen, blocked all three of their phone numbers, and set my phone back on the desk.

At 1:00 PM, Arthur Vance called my landline.

"Liam," Arthur said, his voice laced with professional amusement. "Your father just burst into my reception area demanding to see me. He’s currently red in the face, screaming that he’s going to sue you for elder abuse and breach of verbal contract."

"How are your receptionists handling it?" I asked calmly.

"Excellently," Arthur replied. "Building security is currently guiding him out to the parking lot. I formally advised him through the glass door that any further unannounced visits will result in an immediate restraining order. But Liam, you should know... he yelled something on his way out."

"What did he say?"

"He said if you didn't drop the eviction by Friday, he was going to take the story to the Denver local press and reveal to your investors what kind of 'scum' you really are."

I sat back in my leather executive chair, looking out over the restaurant floor below where dozens of happy patrons were enjoying lunch.

"Let him try, Arthur," I said quietly. "A man who lives in a glass house shouldn't throw stones. Especially when I own the glass."
