Chapter 5 - The Symphony of DestructionThe grand ballroom of the Grand Hotel de Puebla was a sea of crystal chandeliers, tuxedo-clad executives, high-society families, and flashing news cameras.

Diego stood near the center of the room, holding a glass of vintage champagne, surrounded by Grupo Alfa’s top investors. He looked radiant in his custom tuxedo, his ego inflated to astronomical proportions as guests congratulated him on his upcoming appointment.

Beside him stood my mother, Lourdes, dripping in gold jewelry that my money had bought, and Mariana, wearing an expensive red silk dress that poorly concealed her post-pregnancy nerves.

"Look at them," Santiago whispered, stepping up beside me in a sharp dark suit. "They have no idea the floor beneath them is about to disappear."

"Let them enjoy the music a little longer," I whispered back, taking a glass of sparkling water from a waiter’s tray.

At 9:00 PM, the chime echoed through the ballroom, signaling the start of the official announcements.

The Chairman of the Board, Don Fernando—an elderly, respected friend of my late father—stepped up to the podium on the main stage. The room fell silent.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Don Fernando spoke into the microphone. "Tonight, we honor the legacy of our founder, Don Roberto Gomez, and look toward the future of Grupo Alfa Development."

Applause rippled through the hall. Diego straightened his tie, nudging my mother with his elbow, a triumphant grin on his face.

"As many of you know," Don Fernando continued, "tonight was scheduled to be the official transfer of thirty percent of executive voting shares to our Financial Director, Diego Morales."

Diego stepped forward, preparing to walk toward the stage.

"However," Don Fernando said, his voice turning cold and sharp as iron, "before any transfer takes place, the board has yielded the floor to Don Roberto’s eldest daughter, project manager, and majority shareholder—Valeria Gomez."

The spotlight swung away from the stage and landed directly on me.

Diego frowned, confused, as I calmly set my glass down and walked toward the stage in my shimmering emerald dress. The crowd applauded warmly, believing this was merely a dramatic, affectionate introduction from a loving wife.

I stepped onto the stage, accepting the microphone from Don Fernando. I looked out over the room of three hundred people—investors, journalists, society leaders—and finally locked eyes with Diego, Lourdes, and Mariana standing near the front row.

"Thank you, Don Fernando," I began, my voice clear, steady, and carrying effortlessly through the state-of-the-art sound system. "Welcome, everyone. Tonight is indeed a night of legacy, truth, and new beginnings."

Diego smiled awkwardly, giving me a subtle "wrap it up" gesture with his hand.

"For the past six years," I continued, "I believed that my husband, Diego, was working tirelessly to build a future for our family. I believed in his late nights, his dedication, and his integrity. I also believed in the love of my mother, Lourdes, and my sister, Mariana."

Lourdes smiled proudly, fanning herself with a lace fan.

"I believed in them so much," I said, my voice dropping into a thrilling, razor-thin edge, "that while I was weeping in fertility clinics, desperately trying to give my husband a child, I paid for their luxury lives, their credit cards, and their desires."

A quiet hush descended over the ballroom. People began to look at one another in confusion. Diego’s smile completely vanished.

"Valeria?" Diego called out from the floor, taking a step toward the stage, his voice strained. "What are you doing? This isn't the speech—"

"Silence, Diego," I commanded through the microphone, the authority in my voice so absolute that he froze in his tracks.

"You see," I told the crowd, "my husband always told me that family comes first. And he was right. In fact, he loved my sister so much that he decided to start a second family with her—using my money."

Gasp!

A collective wave of shock rippled through the room. Whispers erupted like wildfire.

"Valeria! Have you lost your mind?!" Lourdes shrieked from the front row, her face turning purple. "Security! Stop her!"

None of the security guards moved. Santiago had made sure of that.

"Three days ago," I said calmly, pulling the black flash drive from my clutch, "I walked into Ángeles Hospital to drop off gifts for my new nephew. But outside Room 312, I heard a conversation. And luckily for everyone here tonight... my digital recorder was running."

I nodded toward the AV booth at the back of the hall.

A high-pitched tone echoed through the speakers, followed instantly by the crystal-clear, amplified audio of Diego, Lourdes, and Mariana.

"...Don’t let Valeria realize the baby has Diego’s eyes… not yet."

"...Last week she transferred more money for those fertility treatments. She actually believes we’re still trying to have a baby."

"...As long as she stays quiet and keeps paying, what does it matter? You and Mariana already have your child."

"...She could never give him the family he wanted."

The audio played through the entire room, every brutal word, every arrogant laugh vibrating off the crystal chandeliers.

Mariana covered her face and collapsed into a chair, sobbing hysterically in deep disgrace. Lourdes looked around wildly as high-society women backed away from her in absolute disgust, muttering insults behind their hands.

Diego stood frozen in the center aisle, his face ash-gray, sweat pouring down his forehead.

"That audio," I said as the recording finished, "is accompanied by a complete forensic audit proving that Diego Morales, alongside Lumina Consultores—a shell company owned by my mother and sister—has embezzled over seven million pesos from Grupo Alfa."

On the massive digital screens behind me, the financial flow charts, fake invoices, bank accounts, and signed fraud affidavits appeared in high-definition clarity.

"Diego Morales," I said, looking down at him from the stage with icy triumph. "You wanted to be Managing Partner. But tonight, you are officially fired, divorced, and bankrupt."

At that exact moment, two plainclothes police officers stepped forward from the back of the room, walking down the center aisle.

"Diego Morales?" the lead officer announced, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for grand corporate fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent."

"No! Wait! Valeria! Listen to me!" Diego screamed as the officers grabbed his arms, forcing them behind his back. "It was a mistake! Valeria! I love you! Please!"

"Get your hands off my suit!" Diego thrashed frantically as the officers dragged him through the crowd toward the exit, while news photographers clicked their cameras relentlessly, capturing every second of his public humiliation.

The police officers turned toward Lourdes and Mariana. "Lourdes Gomez and Mariana Gomez, you are ordered to report to the District Attorney's office on Monday morning for asset deposition under court order."

Lourdes fell to her knees on the polished floor, weeping frantically as her gold jewelry clattered against the wood. Mariana buried her head in her hands, completely abandoned by the society she had sought to conquer.

I stood at the podium, surrounded by the applause of the board of directors and the respect of everyone in that room. The storm had passed. The tumors had been removed.

I was finally free.
