Chapter 6 - The New HorizonBy late afternoon, the autumn sun had broken through the Boston clouds, casting a golden glow over the harbor as I walked out of the Apex-Vanguard building.

My phone, which had been buzzing intermittently with pathetic, rambling voicemails from Luke begging for a second chance, was now set to 'Do Not Disturb' permanently. I had already forwarded his voicemails and text transcripts to his corporate HR department and the regional managing partners—actions that would undoubtedly result in his immediate termination for ethical violations and conflict of interest regarding subordinate relationships.

I hailed a black car to take me to Logan Airport for my return flight to Chicago. But as I slid into the leather backseat, I didn't feel the phantom weight of the missing engagement ring on my finger. I only felt an incredible, weightless freedom.

The multi-million dollar contract was signed under my own name. My company was officially independent. The parasitic dead weight of a cheating, ungrateful partner had been permanently shed before it could drag me down into a lifetime of mediocrity.

When the car merged onto the highway toward the airport, I rolled down the window just an inch to let the crisp, clean Boston air wash over my face. I pulled out my tablet, opened a blank document, and began typing the outline for my next major enterprise.

Let Luke keep his intern. Let him keep his overpriced, ill-fitting blazer. I had a empire to build, and this time, every single brick of it belonged entirely to me.
