Chapter 5 - Mending the Broken Pieces

Returning to the Brooks estate felt completely different than it had a week ago.

The massive iron gates opened not to a house of cold marble and suffocating silence, but to a home vibrating with the sweet, chaotic sounds of children laughing.

As soon as the front door opened, three small missiles came flying across the foyer.

“MISS EMILY! DADDY!”

Aiden, Mason, and Caleb crashed directly into Emily’s legs, nearly knocking her over, their little arms wrapping around her waist with joyful desperation. Emily dropped to her knees, laughing through her tears as she hugged them all tightly, burying her face in their curls.

Daniel knelt beside them, pulling all three boys and Emily into one massive, protective circle.

“We’re never, ever leaving, right?” Caleb asked, looking up with wide, hopeful eyes.

“Never,” Daniel promised fiercely, kissing the top of Caleb’s head before looking across at Emily. “Not ever again.”

Over the next several months, the mansion underwent a profound transformation. Daniel stripped away the cold, minimalist interior design that Vanessa had curated, replacing it with warm woods, family photographs, bright colors, and comfortable spaces built for living rather than showing off. He cut his working hours in half, delegating executive management tasks to trusted partners so he could be home for dinner, help with bedtime stories, and coach weekend soccer games in the backyard.

Emily transitioned from being their housekeeper to becoming an equal partner in the household—and in Daniel’s heart.

The proposal didn't happen in a fancy restaurant or under the flash of paparazzi cameras. It happened on a quiet Sunday evening in late autumn.

The boys had finally drifted off to sleep after a long day of building blanket forts in the living room. The house was bathed in the warm, golden glow of the fireplace.

Emily was sitting on the rug folding laundry when Daniel walked over, knelt down beside her, and gently took the laundry basket from her hands, setting it aside.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, simple platinum band set with a single, clear diamond—not flashy, but timeless and elegant.

“Emily,” Daniel said, his voice steady and deeply tender. “When I lost you at the front gates months ago, I realized that I had spent my entire life building an empire of glass and steel, while letting the only real treasure I ever had slip through my fingers. You taught my sons how to love, how to trust, and how to heal. You taught me how to be a father. Will you make this house a real home... permanently? Will you marry me?”

Tears spilled freely down Emily’s cheeks, but this time, they were tears of pure, unadulterated happiness.

She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder.

“Yes, Daniel,” she whispered fiercely. “Yes.”
