Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Vance

If a bomb had detonated in the center of the ballroom, the destruction could not have been more total.
Arthur Vance looked at me as if I had suddenly transformed into a monster. His mouth opened, but no words came out; only a faint, rattling wheeze escaped his throat.
"You?" Julian gasped, turning toward me slowly, his face drained of every drop of blood. "You... you were talking to the federal government?"
"I wasn't just talking to them, Julian," I said smoothly, using the edge of the mahogany table to pull myself slowly, deliberately to my feet. I brushed the silver glitter and cupcake crumbs from my blue dress, standing tall despite the dull ache throbbing in my back and stomach. "I was copying every file you left open on your home laptop while you were out having late-night 'business dinners' with Chloe. I was scanning the physical ledgers your father kept locked in his private wall safe behind the Monet painting—the safe whose combination you gave me four years ago when you were too drunk to remember it yourself."
"You treacherous, ungrateful little bitch!" Beatrice screamed, lunging toward me with her manicured nails outstretched like talons. "We took you out of the dirt! We gave you a name! We gave you luxury!"
Before Beatrice could get within two feet of me, a female FBI agent stepped forward, caught Beatrice by the wrists, pulled her arms roughly behind her back, and clicked a pair of steel handcuffs around her wrists.
"Beatrice Vance, you are also under arrest as a named co-conspirator in the concealment of illegal assets and structuring of fraudulent bank transactions," the agent recited calmly.
"Get your hands off me!" Beatrice shrieked, struggling against the steel restraints as her diamond bracelets clattered loudly. "Julian! Arthur! Do something! Call the governor!"
Arthur didn't call the governor. He couldn't. Two tactical officers grabbed his arms, forcing the powerful billionaire down onto his knees against the cold marble floor. The man who had ruled Chicago’s financial sector with an iron fist for thirty years was unceremoniously searched, his pockets emptied, and his hands cuffed behind his back.
Julian stood frozen, staring at his parents in sheer, paralyzing horror.
Then he looked at Chloe.
Chloe was already backed up against the wall, her phone in her hand, frantically trying to delete her social media accounts while tears streamed down her heavy makeup.
"Jules..." Chloe whimpered, her voice entirely stripped of its earlier arrogance. "What is happening? You said your family was untouchable! You said we were going to live in the penthouse in Miami!"
"Shut up, Chloe!" Julian snapped, his voice cracking with desperation. He turned back to me, taking two steps forward, his hands held out in a pleading gesture. "Clara... baby, look at me. Please. You're upset. You're angry because of Chloe, and I understand! I was foolish! She means nothing to me! It was just a stupid mistake! We can fix this. You're pregnant with my baby! Think of our daughter!"
The audacity of his words was so profound it almost made me laugh aloud.
"Think of our daughter?" I asked, taking a step toward him. "You mean the miracle baby you just let your mother call a mistake? The baby you ignored while you paraded your mistress into our home? The baby whose stomach you pushed me into a table over less than three minutes ago?"
"I didn't mean to push you that hard!" Julian cried out, his eyes darting frantically toward the federal agents who were watching him with cold disgust. "I was stressed! You know how my temper gets! Clara, please, tell them this is a misunderstanding! Tell them you made up the files!"
Agent Lin stepped between us, pulling a second set of warrants from her file.
"Julian Vance," Agent Lin said flatly. "You are under arrest for federal securities fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement. Furthermore, based on the video footage currently being transmitted from the hidden security cameras installed inside this ballroom..." Agent Lin gestured subtly toward a tiny black lens embedded in the frame of a painting behind the gift table, "...you are also being charged with felony domestic battery of a pregnant person."
Julian blinked, his eyes wide with terror as he looked at the hidden camera. "What? No! That—that was a private family dispute!"
"Save it for the magistrate, Mr. Vance," Agent Lin said coldly.
Two officers seized Julian by the shoulders. He tried to pull away, screaming my name, but the agents forced his arms behind his back and snapped the steel cuffs over his wrists with a sharp, definitive click.
"Clara! Please!" Julian sobbed, all his arrogance evaporating into pathetic, desperate wails as he was forced down onto his knees right beside his father. "You loved me! You promised to love me forever!"
"I loved the man I thought you were, Julian," I said softly, looking down at him from my full height. "It took me six years to realize that man was just a hollow mask worn by a pathetic, cruel boy who thought money made him god."
"You'll get nothing!" Arthur Vance snarled from the floor, his face pressed against the marble as an officer secured his legs. "Do you hear me, girl?! The prenuptial agreement you signed is ironclad! You won't get a single penny of Vance money! You'll be back in your cheap, disgusting little apartment, starving!"
I reached into my maternity purse, which was sitting untouched on a side chair, and pulled out a clean, sealed white envelope. I walked over to Arthur, kneeling down gracefully so I was eye-to-eye with the fallen billionaire.
"You're right about one thing, Arthur," I whispered, holding the envelope in front of his face. "The prenuptial agreement was ironclad. It stated that in the event of a divorce, I received no spousal support, no equity in Vance Global Dynamics, and no real estate holdings."
Arthur sneered through his teeth. "Then you have destroyed yourself!"
"You forgot clause fourteen, Arthur," I smiled, my voice smooth as silk. "The clause your high-priced corporate lawyers inserted to protect your family's assets in the event of a federal insolvency or asset forfeiture. Clause fourteen states that if Vance Global Dynamics is seized by the federal government under racketeering statutes, any whistleblower who provides the evidence leading to the conviction of the board members is entitled to thirty percent of the seized assets before public liquidation."
Arthur’s eyes bulged. His jaw dropped open in absolute, paralyzing horror.
"The federal government just frozen four point two billion dollars of your corporate and personal assets, Arthur," I continued, leaning in closer. "Thirty percent of four point two billion is roughly one billion, two hundred and sixty million dollars. Tax-free. Paid directly to the whistleblower by the United States Department of the Treasury."
I stood up, handing the envelope to Agent Lin.
"And as for Vance Global Dynamics?" I added, looking back at the three cuffed members of the Vance family. "I bought fifty-one percent of the toxic debt your father secretly issued through offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands last year. As of twelve o'clock today, I am not just the whistleblower... I am the majority receiver of your entire corporate empire."
Beatrice let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek before fainting flat onto the floor.
Arthur began to choke on his own rage, his face turning dark blue as officers hoisted him to his feet.

Julian stared at me, his eyes wide, hollow, and utterly broken. "Clara... please..."
"Take them away, Agent Lin," I said calmly, turning my back on them. "The air in this house is getting foul."
