Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage CrumblesThe shockwaves hit the Phoenix business community like an earthquake by the end of the week.

Vincent Blackwell sat in his plush executive office on the fortieth floor of the Blackwell Tower, staring blankly at a computer screen that flashed red across every financial dashboard. His desk phone rang incessantly, but he couldn't bring himself to answer it.

His corporate credit lines had been completely revoked. The commercial lenders who used to wine and dine him were now demanding immediate repayment of seventy million dollars in revolving loans. His luxury hotels were facing emergency audits by the state tax commission, instigated by mysterious, untraceable legal filings from the Vance Trust.

The golden cage he had built around himself was collapsing beam by beam.

The heavy mahogany doors of his office suddenly flew open.

Vincent jumped, expecting a bailiff or a federal marshal. Instead, standing in the doorway was Eleanor Vance—no, not his mother, but his high-society mother-in-law? No, Eleanor was his mother, a woman who had spent years looking down on Marissa as a boring, unremarkable girl from a modest background.

"Vincent! What is going on?!" Eleanor shrieked, marching into the office in her designer Chanel suit, her face flushed with panic. "I tried to book my spa weekend at the Scottsdale resort, and my Black Card was declined! The concierge treated me like a common thief! Do you have any idea how embarrassing that was?!"

Vincent buried his face in his hands, letting out a hollow, bitter laugh. "Your spa card, Mom? My entire life is currently being liquidated."

Before Eleanor could demand an explanation, the office door pushed open again. Two tall men in dark suits stepped inside, flanked by Darren Holt.

"Mr. Vincent Blackwell?" the lead man asked, flashing a federal badge and a state court order. "You are hereby served with a temporary restraining order, a corporate asset seizure warrant, and a mandatory injunction prohibiting you from entering any property owned by the Vance-Blackwell Trust."

"You can't do this!" Vincent roared, standing up so fast his leather chair crashed backward into the wall. "I built this company! I negotiated those contracts! I am Vincent Blackwell!"

"You were Vincent Blackwell," Darren corrected smoothly, stepping past the federal agents. "As of ten minutes ago, the Board of Directors—now entirely consisting of Vance Trust appointees—voted unanimously to strip you of your CEO title, revoke your corporate shares, and ban you from all company premises."

Eleanor clutched her pearls, gasping for air. "Strip him of his title? He is a Blackwell! Who authorized this?!"

A soft click echoed from the hallway.

The heavy doors pushed open wider, and the private elevator chimed.

Click. Click. Click.

The rhythmic sound of heels clicked against the Italian marble floor. The murmurs in the hallway died instantly.

Marissa Blackwell walked into the office.

She wasn't wearing hospital scrubs or the modest, thrift-store-adjacent clothes Eleanor used to mock at charity galas. She wore a tailored, midnight-black Armani pantsuit, her silver-streaked blonde hair styled in sleek waves, and a pair of dark sunglasses resting on her collar. She looked every bit the billionaire heiress she had always been, carrying an aura of absolute, untouchable power.

Vincent stared at her as if he were looking at a ghost.

"Marissa..." he breathed, taking an involuntary step backward. "You... you were in the ICU. You were unconscious."

"And while I was unconscious, fighting for my life after bringing your three sons into the world, you signed divorce papers hoping to bury me," Marissa said, her voice smooth, calm, and freezing cold.

She stopped right in front of him, removing her sunglasses to reveal eyes that burned with icy fury.

"Marissa, please," Vincent stammered, his arrogant facade completely shattered as he realized the woman standing before him held his entire existence in the palm of her hand. "It was a mistake! A momentary lapse in judgment! Stress from the pregnancy, the business pressures... we can talk about this! We have three boys together!"

Eleanor rushed forward, attempting to salvage her dignity. "Marissa, darling, let's not be hasty! Family is everything! Surely you aren't going to throw your husband out on the street over a silly misunderstanding—"

"Save it, Eleanor," Marissa snapped, cutting off her former mother-in-law with a flick of her wrist. "For six years, you and your son treated me like an outsider, a charity case you graciously allowed to sit at your dinner table. You mocked my clothes, my quiet demeanor, and my background. You thought I was plain rice."

Marissa turned her gaze back to Vincent, who looked like a whipped dog.

"You wanted my money, Vincent," Marissa said quietly. "You wanted the Vance empire wrapped up neatly in your name. Well, you got your wish. You wanted a clean break from me?"

May you like

She reached into her designer briefcase, pulled out a single document, and tossed it onto his mahogany desk.

"Consider our separation finalized. You are walking out of this building today with exactly what you brought into our marriage six years ago: nothing."
