Chapter 3 - The Return to Northbridge

The boardroom on the forty-fifth floor was usually a sanctuary of calm, hushed negotiations and quiet power. Tonight, it was a den of palpable panic.

When the heavy double doors swung open, fourteen of the most powerful executives, investors, and board members in the hospitality industry stopped talking mid-sentence. They turned toward the entrance, expecting to see Martin Vale bearing news of a successful corporate coup.

Instead, they saw me.

I walked in flanked by Detective Quinn, Attorney Arthur Vance, and my two bodyguards. My stride was steady, my posture unyielding, and my gaze swept across the room with absolute authority.

Julian Vance—an elderly board member who had been quietly taking bribes from Martin to vote in favor of the restructuring—dropped his pen. It clicked loudly against the polished walnut table.

“Adrian?” Julian stammered, half-rising from his leather chair. “We... we were told you were at the hospital. The police reports floating on the news channels said—aid us, what is happening?”

“What is happening, Julian, is that your little coup has just been cancelled,” I said, walking straight to the head of the long conference table where Martin Vale’s empty leather chair sat waiting.

I didn't sit down. I placed both hands flat on the table, leaning forward as I looked into the eyes of men and women who had spent the last three months whispering behind my back about my supposed mental decline.

“For months, you watched my wife isolate me,” I began, my voice echoing off the acoustic panels of the ceiling. “You accepted forged medical notes without a single independent verification. You allowed Martin Vale to present fraudulent quarterly audits showing a decline in our European portfolio—audits designed to devalue our stock so your secret consortium could buy up the float at a discount.”

“That is a severe accusation, Adrian!” a female board member protested, her face flushing crimson. “We are the fiduciary backbone of Northbridge! We acted on the medical advice provided by your family!”

“My family,” I laughed, a cold, humorless sound. “Let me show you what my family was really doing.”

Arthur Vance stepped forward, clicking a remote control. The massive projection screen behind the table flickered to life, illuminating the room with a series of brightly colored financial spreadsheets, intercepted text messages, and high-resolution photographs of offshore wire transfers.

The Secret Consortium: A detailed list of every board member who had signed a non-disclosure agreement with Martin Vale to support the hostile takeover.

The Embezzlement Logs: Exact figures showing how over $45 million had been funneled out of the capital improvement fund into private accounts in Zurich and the Cayman Islands.

The Murder Conspiracy: The intercepted audio recording of Celeste and Martin discussing how easy it would be to make my death look like a tragic accident caused by an accidental overdose of heart medication.

The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence. No one breathed. No one moved. Several executives looked down at their tablets, suddenly finding the polished grain of the table intensely fascinating.

“Every single person who signed an NDA with Martin Vale is currently listed on an active federal warrant for conspiracy, insider trading, and corporate racketeering,” Detective Quinn announced, stepping up beside me and resting her hand on her holster. “You have two choices. You can either vote unanimously right now to restore Adrian North as sole Chairman and CEO with absolute emergency governance powers, or I can start handing out handcuffs right here at this table.”

Julian Vance didn't even hesitate. With shaking hands, he reached for his voting console, pressed the green confirmation button, and whispered, “The... the motion passes unanimously. Welcome back, Adrian.”

I looked around the room, meeting the terrified gaze of every corporate predator who had thought they could devour me.

“The meeting is adjourned,” I said quietly. “Pack your briefcases. Tomorrow morning, we audit every single department from the ground up.”
