Chapter 2 - The Pharmacy Vault

The central pharmacy of St. Matthew’s Hospital was located in the basement level of the west wing—a sterile, steel-reinforced fortress behind double-paned security glass and biometric keypads.

I didn't take the elevator. I ran down four flights of concrete fire stairs, my sneakers slapping loudly against the steps, my chest heaving, driven by a raw, primal maternal panic.

When I reached the basement corridor, the heavy glass doors to the pharmacy reception area were locked.

Inside, sitting comfortably behind a mahogany desk in an executive office visible through the glass, was Vanessa Cole.

She was twenty-six, dressed in a crisp designer blouse, casually sipping a iced latte while flipping through a fashion magazine. On the desk beside her sat a refrigerated stainless-steel courier case bearing the red biohazard seal—the exact case that contained Lily’s life-saving Immunex-9 doses.

I slammed my palms against the heavy security glass.

CLANG!

Vanessa jumped, dropping her iced coffee, her eyes widening in surprise as she looked toward the entrance. When she recognized me, her surprised expression quickly melted into a smug, condescending smile.

She picked up the internal intercom microphone. Her voice buzzed through the wall speaker, smooth and infuriatingly calm.

"Emily? What are you doing down here? Visitors aren't allowed in the central processing wing."

"Open the door, Vanessa," I said, my voice flat, holding my hand flat against the glass. "Give me the box."

Vanessa leaned back in her leather chair, crossing her legs. She gestured casually toward the refrigerated box on her desk.

"I'm sorry, Emily. Daniel signed this allocation over to my personal treatment file. My doctor submitted the clinical necessity paperwork an hour ago. It’s officially logged in the network database."

"You don't have the condition, Vanessa," I said, stepping closer to the glass. "You forged the clinical charts. Daniel gave you his administrative override code to alter the hospital registry."

Vanessa picked up a nail file, casually scraping at her manicure. "Even if that were true, Emily, Daniel is the Director. His signature is law in this building. My health comes first now. Daniel told me how much of a financial burden Lily’s condition has been on your marriage. Honestly, it’s selfish of you to keep draining his income for a child who is clearly not going to make it anyway."

The cold, monstrous cruelty of her words hung in the air.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry.

I looked at the digital wall clock beside the door: 11:14 AM. Lily had less than ten minutes before irreparable brain damage set in.

I stepped up to the biometric keycard scanner beside the glass door.

Vanessa laughed over the speaker. "Don't bother. My clearance is active. Yours doesn't exist."

I didn't use a keycard. I pressed my right thumb firmly onto the optical glass sensor, then leaned forward and allowed the retinal scanner to sweep across my left eye.

The scanner beeped wildly. A harsh yellow light flashed, followed by an automated mechanical voice:

"RECOGNIZED: EMILY CARTER. FORMER CHIEF COMPLIANCE AUDITOR (ID: 884-DELTA). OVERRIDE PROTOCOL INITIATED. ENTER SYSTEM PIN."

Vanessa’s smug smile vanished instantly. She sat up straight, her face draining of color. "What? How do you have access?!"

Six years ago, when I left the department, my administrator credentials were never revoked; they were merely placed into dormant administrative hold under federal emergency protocols. Daniel had been so blinded by his own arrogance that he never checked the legacy clearance logs.

I punched in my twelve-digit master key: 0 - 4 - 1 - 2 - 8 - 8 - 9 - 1 - 0 - 5 - 2 - 2.

HEAVY HYDRAULIC CLICK.

The heavy steel bolt retracted, and the thick glass security door slid open with a sharp hiss of compressed air.

Vanessa gasped, stumbling backward out of her chair, knocking over a stack of files as I strode into the office.

"Stay back!" Vanessa yelled, reaching for her phone. "I'm calling security! Daniel!"

I didn't even look at her. I walked straight to the desk, grabbed the heavy refrigerated courier case by its handle, and pulled it toward me.

Vanessa grabbed the other side of the handle, her long acrylic nails digging into the metal. "You can't take this! Daniel said this was mine! He loves me! He's leaving you!"

I turned my head and looked Vanessa straight in the eyes. The sheer, terrifying fury in my expression made her freeze.

"If you don't take your hands off my daughter's life in three seconds," I whispered, "I will use this metal case to break every bone in your fingers."

Vanessa let go as if the metal were white-hot iron. She fell back against the wall, trembling, staring at me as if I were a demon raised from the earth.

I checked the digital temperature gauge on the front of the case: 3.8°C. The cold chain was still intact. The three vials of Immunex-9 were safe.

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors at the far end of the hallway burst open.

Daniel sprinted into the room, his tie undone, his lab coat flying open, holding a keycard in his hand. He looked frantic, breathless, and flushed with rage.

"Emily!" Daniel roared, stepping between me and the exit. "Put that case down right now! What the hell do you think you're doing?!"
