Chapter 3 - The Audit

Thirty minutes later, the life-saving biological compound was successfully administered into Lily’s IV line under the direct supervision of Dr. Bennett and two state medical board inspectors.

Inside the quiet, sunlit ICU bay, the steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep... of the cardiac monitor signaled that Lily's blood pressure was rising, her oxygen levels stabilizing, and the life-threatening autoimmune storm within her small body was finally subsiding.

Emily sat beside the bed, holding Lily’s small, warm hand against her cheek, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes as she watched her daughter’s chest rise and fall in a peaceful, natural slumber.

Dr. Bennett stepped into the room, holding two thick white file folders. He looked exhausted, but his expression was illuminated by a profound sense of relief.

"She’s out of the danger zone, Emily," Dr. Bennett said softly, pulling up a chair beside her. "Her kidney function markers have normalized. The drug is working. In forty-eight hours, we should be able to move her out of the ICU and into a regular recovery room."

"Thank you, Dr. Bennett," Emily sobbed gently, kissing Lily’s knuckles. "Thank you for standing up to him."

"I didn't do anything extraordinary, Emily," Dr. Bennett replied, his face darkening slightly. "Your husband was a predator who thought his corporate title gave him God-like authority over life and death. But I think you should see this."

He handed one of the thick white folders to Emily.

"What is this?" she asked, wiping her eyes.

"While the FBI was processing Daniel's office, the hospital’s internal forensic audit team unlocked his private servers," Dr. Bennett explained. "This isn't the first time he's diverted high-value specialized pharmaceuticals, Emily."

Emily opened the file, her eyes scanning line after line of highlighted red entries.

"Over the past three years," Dr. Bennett revealed, "Daniel has systematically diverted over four million dollars worth of rare cancer medications, experimental treatments, and specialized pediatric biologicals from the hospital's central storage facility. He was running an illicit medical brokerage network with high-net-worth foreign buyers who paid cash for unlisted drugs."

Emily gasped, her blood running cold. "He was selling hospital drugs on the black market?!"

"Yes," Dr. Bennett nodded grimly. "And Vanessa Cole wasn't just his mistress. She was his operational record-keeper. She managed the shell accounts in the Cayman Islands where the wire transfers were deposited. The reason Lily’s dose was diverted wasn't just to treat Vanessa's skin—it was because Daniel had already sold Lily’s assigned secondary batch to a private buyer in Dubai for two hundred thousand dollars, and he used Vanessa as the cover story to hide the missing inventory from the floor nurses."

Emily gripped the paper so tightly it crumpled in her fingers. The sheer depth of Daniel’s sociopathy was staggering. He hadn't just made a selfish decision in a moment of passion; he was a cold, calculating criminal who viewed his own daughter’s life-saving medicine as mere inventory to be sold for profit.

The door to the ICU bay swung open, and Marcus Sterling—Atlanta’s top corporate litigation attorney and a lifelong friend of Emily’s late father—walked into the room. He carried a heavy leather briefcase, his expression cold and focused.

"Emily," Marcus said, bowing his head respectfully to Dr. Bennett. "Agent Vance just briefed me on the criminal charges. Daniel’s arraignment is set for tomorrow morning at nine o'clock in the Federal District Court."

"Is he getting bail, Marcus?" Emily asked, her voice turning to pure ice.

Marcus let out a short, cynical laugh. "With federal drug trafficking, health care fraud, felony child abuse, and offshore money laundering charges on the docket? Not a chance. The magistrate judge locked him up without bond."

Marcus pulled a stack of legal documents from his briefcase and laid them on the bedside table.

"I have already prepared emergency petitions for total dissolution of marriage, permanent forfeiture of marital assets, and sole legal and physical custody of Lily with zero visitation rights," Marcus stated. "Furthermore, because Daniel used hospital credentials to execute his crimes, St. Matthew's Board of Trustees has just voted unanimously to liquidate his pension and transfer his entire corporate severance package directly into a medical trust fund for Lily."

Emily looked down at her daughter’s peaceful face, reaching out to tuck a strand of dark hair behind her tiny ear.

"It’s not enough, Marcus," Emily said softly.

Marcus raised an eyebrow. "What else do you want, Emily?"

May you like

"I want his name stripped from every medical registry in the country," Emily declared, looking up with fierce, unshakeable resolve. "I want his license permanently revoked, his assets seized, and I want everyone who helped him hide those accounts brought to total justice."

"Then sign here," Marcus said with a slow, approving smile, handing her a sleek gold pen. "And let's finish him."
