Chapter 4 - The Final Course

Inside the private dining room of L’Avenir, the atmosphere had shifted from celebratory to strained. Daniel had returned to the table ten minutes after I left, his face pale and sweating despite the cool air conditioning. He hadn't touched his wine. When Vivian asked him where I was, he had simply snapped that I was feeling unwell and had gone home.

"Honestly, Daniel," Vivian scoffed, setting down her dessert spoon. "The girl has no stamina. A little social gathering and she falls apart. You really need to teach her how to carry herself in public. It reflects poorly on the family name."

"Shut up, Mom," Daniel muttered, his hands trembling as he stared at his phone screen. The confirmation email from the Zurich bank hadn't arrived yet, and his anxiety was reaching a fever pitch.

Vivian’s eyes widened in shock. "What did you just say to me?"

Before Daniel could answer, the heavy mahogany doors of the private dining room were pushed open. But it wasn't the waiters carrying the grand soufflé.

Six federal agents in dark suits and tactical vests stepped into the room, their golden badges glinting under the crystal chandeliers. The polite conversations of the cousins and uncles died instantly. A wine glass slipped from someone’s hand, shattering against the floor.

"Federal agents! Nobody move, stay in your seats," a commanding voice echoed through the space.

Vivian stood up, her diamond bracelet clattering against her plate. Her aristocratic poise turned into high-society outrage. "What is the meaning of this? Do you know who we are? This is a private family event! My husband was the state senator!"

Agent Elena Vance stepped through the line of agents, her expression completely unyielding. "Vivian Whitmore? Daniel Whitmore? I am Special Agent Vance with the FBI. We have federal warrants for your arrest for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, money laundering, and identity theft."

Daniel tried to stand, his eyes darting toward the emergency exit at the back of the room, but two agents moved instantly, pinning his arms behind his back and forcing him down against the table. The white tablecloth crumpled, spilling a bowl of sugar cubes across the floor.

"Mom! Do something!" Daniel screamed, his voice cracking with the same pathetic terror I had seen in the bathroom. "They know about the accounts! They know about Aegis!"

Vivian’s face drained of color. She looked at her son, then at the agents, her mind frantically trying to find a loophole, a connection, a politician she could call to make this nightmare go away. "There’s been a mistake. My daughter-in-law, Claire... she handles our private accounts. If there is any financial irregularity, it’s her doing! She’s an orphan, we took her in, and she’s been stealing from us!"

"Is that so, Vivian?"

I stepped into the room, walking slowly past the line of silent, terrified family members. The salad debris was gone, my hair was smoothed back into a sleek, professional low ponytail, and I looked every bit the analytical data expert I was. I stood at the foot of the table, looking down at the woman who had spent five years trying to make me feel small.

"Claire!" Vivian gasped, her eyes widening with a horrific realization. "You... you little snake. You did this."

"No, Vivian," I said, my voice calm, steady, and perfectly clear. "You did this to yourselves. For eight months, you moved money through accounts in my name, planning to make me your scapegoat. But you forgot one simple rule of data: every transaction leaves a footprint. And quiet women are very good at tracking footprints."

Elena Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt. "Daniel Whitmore, you are under arrest. Vivian Whitmore, place your hands behind your back."

As the cold steel clicked around Vivian’s manicured wrists, her diamond bracelet caught the light one last time. She stared at me, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, her high-society armor completely shattered into dust.
