Chapter 3 - The Broken Golden BoyThe Confrontation in Silk and SteelJulian burst through the double mahogany doors of Eleanor’s office three seconds after the receptionist opened them.

He looked disastrous. His silk tie was loosened, the top two buttons of his shirt were undone, his hair was wild, and his eyes were bloodshot. The arrogant, composed posture he had maintained for five years had completely shattered, replaced by the frantic energy of a man who realized the ground beneath his feet was caving in.
"Maya!" Julian gasped, stepping toward my chair.
"Stop right there, Julian," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into an icy register that made him freeze five feet away. "You step one inch closer to my client, and I will have the armed guards on this floor drop you to the carpet. You are currently violating a temporary restraining order."
Julian looked at Eleanor, then looked at me.
I sat back in the leather armchair, legs crossed, wearing an immaculate navy suit, looking at him as if he were a minor inconvenience on my afternoon schedule.
"Maya, please," Julian pleaded, his hands trembling as he reached toward me. "You have to call off the police. You have to drop the charges against Mom. She’s fifty-eight years old! She can't stay in a jail cell! She's having a panic attack!"
"She seemed perfectly healthy when she was shoving me into a shoe cabinet," I replied calmly. "Her arm strength was quite impressive for a woman having a panic attack."
"It was an accident!" Julian yelled, dropping his hands to his sides in frustration. "She panicked! You pushed her buttons, Maya! You know how sensitive she is about her position in the family! Why couldn't you just apologize like I asked you to?!"
I stood up slowly.
Despite wearing heels, I was almost as tall as him, but at that moment, the power dynamic in the room shifted so violently that Julian actually took a half-step back.
"Apologize?" I repeated softly. "I paid half the mortgage on an apartment your mother treated like her personal hotel. I cooked, I cleaned, I funded her credit cards without my knowledge, and when I asked for basic respect in my own home, she struck me and cracked my head open. And your response was to tell me I deserved it."
"I was angry!" Julian stammered, his face flushing with shame. "I didn't know she actually hit you! I thought... I thought you were just exaggerating like you usually do!"
"Exaggerating?" Eleanor interjected, spinning her monitor toward him. "Is six stitches an exaggeration, Julian? Is the security footage of your mother laughing over her body an exaggeration? Or perhaps this three-hundred-and-forty-thousand-dollar paper trail of embezzled funds is just a figment of our imagination?"
Julian’s eyes landed on the spreadsheet displayed on the screen.
The color drained from his face so fast I thought he was going to faint onto the Persian rug.
"What... what is that?" he whispered.
"That," I said, walking around the desk to stand directly in front of him, "is the audit of CV Consulting. Every purse, every Sedona spa weekend, every payment on her luxury car that you stole from our joint account. I know everything, Julian."
"Maya... no... please..." Julian’s voice cracked into a pathetic whimper. He dropped to his knees right there in front of the desk, reaching out to grab the hem of my pants. "Please, don't do this. If the firm finds out about this, I'll lose my partnership. I'll lose my license! My career will be over!"
"Your career is over, Julian," I said, stepping back so his hands clutched empty air. "Because Eleanor is filing the formal complaint with the Ethics Board at five o'clock today. And by tomorrow morning, the civil lawsuit will be served at your office."
"You're destroying my life!" he sobbed, looking up at me with raw, pathetic desperate eyes.
"No, Julian," I said, leaning down until I was inches from his face, my voice as cold as absolute zero. "You destroyed your life the second you decided your mother’s cruelty was worth more than your wife’s safety. Now get out of this office before I have you arrested for criminal trespass."

He didn't move for three seconds, paralyzed by the sheer terror of his new reality. Then, Eleanor pressed the red button on her desk phone.
Two broad-shouldered private security guards stepped into the room, grabbed Julian under his armpits, and dragged him out into the lobby, his frantic cries echoing off the glass walls until the heavy doors slammed shut.
