Chapter 5 - The Weight of Justice

Four months later.

The Federal District Courthouse in downtown Chicago was silent as the jury filed back into the courtroom. The gallery was filled with journalists, federal agents, medical personnel, and advocates from child protection agencies across the country.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a dark suit. Beside me sat Detective Sarah Lawson and Dr. Robert Chen.

At the defense table sat Raymond Vance. He was dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands restrained in heavy leather cuffs. He looked stripped of all his former bravado—his face pale, his hair thinning, his eyes darting nervously toward the judge’s bench.

Judge Eleanor Vance (no relation) slammed her wooden gavel down.

“Will the jury foreman please read the verdict?” Judge Vance announced.

A stern-looking man in his fifties stood up, holding a stack of official court documents.

“In the matter of the United States v. Raymond Vance,” the foreman read, his voice clear and unwavering. “On Count 1, Interstate Kidnapping of a Minor: Guilty. On Count 2, First-Degree Human Trafficking: Guilty. On Count 3, Aggravated Child Torture: Guilty. On Count 4, Attempted Murder: Guilty.”

A collective gasp swept through the courtroom, followed by the soft sound of weeping from the victim’s support bench.

During the three-week trial, the prosecution had presented an airtight case. The encrypted flash drive recovered from inside Lily’s hot-pink cast had provided federal prosecutors with the evidence needed to dismantle an entire multi-state criminal syndicate, leading to forty-two arrests across six states.

My testimony had taken two full days. I had stood before the jury and demonstrated how the cast saw had hit the heavy steel blade, holding up the bloody crayon note and the pieces of hot-pink fiberglass that had saved two lives.

Judge Vance looked over her glasses at Raymond Vance, her face set in an expression of absolute, unyielding coldness.

“Raymond Vance,” Judge Vance declared, her voice echoing off the high marble walls. “You used the body of an innocent child as a vessel for your criminal cruelty. You inflicted horrifying physical and psychological torture on a mother and her daughter. It is the judgment of this court that you be remanded to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons for the remainder of your natural life, without the possibility of parole.”

Raymond Vance opened his mouth as if to speak, but the bailiffs immediately grabbed his arms, dragging him toward the heavy steel side doors of the courtroom. As he was led away, his eyes briefly met mine.

I didn't look away. I stood tall, watching him disappear behind the steel doors forever.
