Chapter 2 - The Horrifying Medical Reveal

The lights of the emergency room bounced off the metallic ceiling in a nauseating blur as I drifted in and out of consciousness. Voices echoed around me—sharp, urgent, authoritative.
"We have a twenty-eight-week pregnant female, severe hypothermia, core temp 93 degrees, erratic fetal heart rate!"
"Get her to Trauma Bay 3! Prepare for an emergency C-section!"
"Hold on, get the blood panels back immediately! Look at her blood pressure—it's crashing!"
I couldn't speak. I couldn't feel my fingers or toes. All I felt was a crushing weight on my chest and a deep, terrifying void where my baby’s kick should have been. I tried to lift my hand, but I couldn't move.
In the surgical waiting room, Jacob sat with his head in his hands, shaking violently. His father paced the floor like a caged animal, while Brenda sat in the corner, staring at her phone, trying desperately to pretend this was all an overreaction.
Two hours passed before the double doors swung open. A team of three doctors walked out. Leading them was Dr. Elizabeth Chen, the chief of maternal-fetal medicine, accompanied by a senior toxicologist and a hospital risk manager. Their faces were grim, hardened, and entirely devoid of the professional comfort doctors usually offer.
Jacob leaped to his feet. "Doctor! How is she? How is my wife? How is our baby?"
Dr. Chen looked at Jacob, then shifted her razor-sharp gaze toward Brenda and Arthur.
"Your wife, Clara, is currently in the ICU," Dr. Chen said, her voice dripping with ice. "We performed an emergency Cesarean section to save her life and the life of your son. Your baby boy was delivered at twenty-eight weeks weighing just two pounds, eight ounces. He is currently on a ventilator in the NICU fighting for his life."
Jacob slumped back slightly, tears welling in his eyes. "Thank God... thank God they're alive..."
"Do not celebrate yet, Mr. Vance," Dr. Chen interrupted harshly. "What we found during surgery and in Clara’s routine blood work is why we have called the hospital authorities and the police department."
The waiting room went dead silent. Brenda’s phone slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the linoleum floor.
"What do you mean?" Arthur asked, stepping forward. "What did you find?"
Dr. Chen pulled up a chart on her tablet.
"Clara did not just collapse from hypothermia, though being locked in sub-zero temperatures for over forty minutes triggered acute placental abruption—which almost killed her and suffocated your baby," Dr. Chen explained coldly. "But when we ran her full toxicology screen to understand why her blood pressure crashed so drastically prior to the cold exposure, we discovered something horrifying."
The toxicologist stepped forward, holding a clear plastic folder containing lab results.
"Clara’s blood contained alarming, toxic levels of Methergine and concentrated synthetic oxytocic compounds," the toxicologist revealed. "These are heavy pharmaceutical agents used exclusively in clinical settings to force uterine contractions. They are never prescribed to a woman at twenty-eight weeks of pregnancy because they trigger violent labor and fatal fetal distress."
Jacob blinked, bewildered. "Oxytocic compounds? How could that be in her blood? She only takes her prenatal vitamins!"
"She wasn't taking them voluntarily," Dr. Chen said, her eyes narrowing directly onto Brenda. "These compounds were ingested orally, repeatedly, over the last three weeks in small, disguised doses, culminating in a massive, concentrated dose delivered within the last four hours."
Arthur turned slowly toward his daughter, his eyes widening in pure horror. "Brenda... what did you do?"
"Nothing!" Brenda shrieked, jumping up from her chair, her voice high-pitched and defensive. "I didn't do anything! Why are you looking at me?! She probably took something herself to frame me! She’s crazy!"
May you like
"Clara didn't frame anyone," Dr. Chen replied smoothly. "And fortunately for justice, our medical team preserved every vial of blood, every lab sample, and the police are already at your apartment with a search warrant."
Before Brenda could take another step, two city police detectives stepped out from the hallway elevators.
