Chapter 3 - The Fractured Alignment

Jacob stood in the center of the sterile hospital room, his hands pressed against his temples as if trying to prevent his skull from splitting open. The revelation from Dr. Aris had completely dismantled the reality he had lived in his entire life. To Jacob, Brenda was just the difficult, overbearing older sister who had a sharp tongue but a good heart. To accept that she was a calculated attempted murderer was a bridge too far for his mind to cross in a single moment.
"Elena, think about what you're saying," Jacob stammered, his voice filled with a desperate, defensive denial. "Brenda is harsh, yes. She’s stubborn, and she can be incredibly cruel with her words. But poison? Attempted murder? She’s a senior research chemist at the state university agricultural division! She knows everything about chemicals, why would she—"
He froze, the words dying in his throat as the realization of his own statement hit him. Senior research chemist at the agricultural division. The exact place where industrial-strength laboratory pesticides were developed and tested every single day.
"She had the access, Jacob," I whispered, tears of betrayal spilling over my cheeks. "She had the motive. You know how she’s looked at me ever since we got engaged. She thinks I took you away from her. She thinks I don't deserve the Vance family name. And tonight... she locked me out on that balcony on purpose. She didn't want to teach me a lesson. She wanted to accelerate the process. She wanted the cold to finish what the poison started."
Before Jacob could respond, the door to the room swung open.
Evelyn and Arthur Vance stepped inside, their faces masks of middle-class suburban concern. Behind them, wearing a stylish cashmere coat and holding a designer leather purse, was Brenda. She looked perfectly composed, her makeup flawless, the picture of a supportive sister-in-law arriving at the hospital after a sudden domestic accident.
"Oh, thank goodness you're awake, Elena!" Evelyn cried, rushing to the side of the bed opposite Jacob, completely oblivious to the toxic dynamic in the room. "Jacob called us from the ambulance and said you had fainted on the balcony. How on earth did you get stuck out there, sweetie? The lock on that door must be faulty. We need to call the landlord immediately."
I didn't look at Evelyn. My eyes locked directly onto Brenda, who stood at the foot of the bed.
For a fraction of a second, when Brenda’s eyes met mine, I saw a flicker of absolute panic cross her features. She hadn't expected me to be awake. More importantly, she hadn't expected me to be alive. She had assumed that by the time someone found me on that balcony, the combination of the sub-zero wind and the chemical toxins in my blood would have completed the perfect, undetected miscarriage.
"Yes, Elena," Brenda said, her voice smooth and dripping with artificial sweetness as she took a step forward. "We were all so incredibly worried. You really shouldn't be going outside in your condition without a coat. It was incredibly irresponsible of you. You could have seriously harmed my brother's child."
The sheer, unadulterated audacity of her statement made the anger inside my chest solidify into a cold, dangerous resolve. The weak, accommodating version of Elena who had spent years trying to earn this woman's approval died right there on that hospital mattress.
"The lock isn't faulty, Evelyn," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a scalpel.
Evelyn blinked, confused. "What do you mean, dear?"
"The door didn't accidentally close," I continued, keeping my eyes locked onto Brenda, watching the color slowly drain from her cheeks. "Brenda followed me out to the kitchen. She watched me step onto the balcony, she slammed the door shut, and I watched her hand click the lock from the inside. I pounded on that glass for twenty minutes until my hands bled and I lost consciousness. She told me through the window that a little suffering would toughen me up."
Evelyn gasped, dropping her purse onto the floor. She turned to look at her daughter, her mouth open in shock. "Brenda? Is... is this true?"
"Of course not, Mother!" Brenda snapped instantly, her voice rising an octave as she defensive walls went up. "Elena is completely delusional! The doctor just said she was suffering from severe hypothermia. She’s hallucinating! She’s probably trying to blame me because she feels guilty for her own carelessness. Jacob, you can't possibly believe this ridiculous story!"
The room went completely silent as everyone turned to look at Jacob. This was the moment of truth. For three years, my husband had stood on the fence, attempting to appease both the woman he married and the sister he grew up with. He had allowed his family's toxic behavior to pass under the guise of "that's just how they are."
Jacob looked at his sister, then he looked at the medical charts hanging at the foot of my bed. He thought about the laboratory where she worked, the herbal teas she brought over, and the cold reality of the medical report Dr. Aris had just delivered.
"Brenda," Jacob said, his voice dropping into a low, trembling register. "Did you lock my wife out on that balcony?"
"Jacob! I am your sister!" Brenda shrieked, stepping back. "How dare you question me over the word of this outsider? She’s been trying to divide our family since the day you met her!"
"Answer the question, Brenda!" Jacob roared, the sheer volume of his voice making his mother jump.
"Enough," a new voice interrupted from the doorway.

Two uniformed officers from the city precinct stepped into the room, followed closely by a plainclothes detective holding a clear plastic evidence bag. Inside the bag was a small, amber glass bottle with a university research label on it.
"Brenda Vance?" the detective asked, pulling a silver badge from his pocket. "I am Detective Miller from the domestic crimes unit. We just executed an emergency search warrant at your apartment and your university laboratory locker based on the chemical profiles provided by the hospital administration. We found a secondary stash of unlisted pesticide compounds in your purse—the exact compound currently circulating in your sister-in-law's bloodstream. You are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated assault, and fetal endangerment."
