Chapter 5 - The Reconstruction of the Legacy

The air outside was cold, sweet, and filled with the rich, earthy scent of wet soil and blooming flora.

Down in the garden, I saw Jesse.

He had taken off his suit jacket, rolled up his sleeves, and was kneeling in the damp soil beneath the white rose bushes. He was using a hand trowel to carefully clear away the crushed petals and weeds that Misty’s heavy heels had stomped into the dirt the day before.

He looked up as he heard my footsteps on the gravel path.

He didn't offer a fake smile. He didn't make an excuse. He just wiped his forehead with his dusty forearm and gestured toward the rose bushes.

“The roots are deep, Cassie,” Jesse said quietly, his voice humble and grounded. “Misty crushed some of the surface stems yesterday, but the roots weren't touched at all. With a little work and proper fertilizer, these bushes are going to bloom twice as strong next month.”

I walked over and knelt down in the dirt beside him, taking a pair of spare pruning shears from the wooden garden bench.

“Dad always said white roses are tough,” I said, clipping away a damaged, frayed branch with a clean, sharp snip. “They survive winter frost, summer heat, and bad storms. You just have to know how to cut away the dead wood so the healthy stems can breathe.”

Jesse watched me cut the branch, a small, genuine smile finally appearing on his tired face.

“Teach me,” Jesse whispered. “Teach me how Dad did it.”

I looked at my brother, hand in hand with him in the soil our father had worked for forty years, and felt the last remaining pieces of my heart fall back into place.

“First rule,” I said, handing him a pair of thick leather gardening gloves. “A steady hand... but never one filled with cruelty.”

Over the next six months, the Vance Estate underwent a transformation—not the gaudy, commercial makeover Misty had envisioned, but a complete rebirth of spirit and purpose.

With Simon and Misty both serving sentences in federal prison following their guilty pleas for extortion and corporate fraud, their names vanished entirely from the city’s social registers. Their debt-ridden logistics firm was dissolved, its remaining assets auctioned off to pay for the legal restitution ordered to the Vance Estate.

Jesse dedicated himself entirely to his recovery and rehabilitation.

Every single day, six days a week, Jesse woke up at six in the morning to work alongside the estate’s groundskeepers and financial accountants. Under my supervision, he learned the true value of hard work, managing the Vance Holdings dividend distributions with complete transparency and honesty. He paid back every single penny of his personal debts through his own earned salary, his posture growing straighter and his eyes growing clearer with every passing month.

Meanwhile, Brenda and I turned Harrison Vance’s thirty-acre property into something truly extraordinary.
