Chapter 4 - Blood and Loyalty

The gunfire tapered off into an eerie, smoking silence twenty minutes later.

When the heavy steel door of the panic room finally hissed open, I was standing ready, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker like a spear.

Marcus stood in the doorway, his shoulder stained with dark blood, breathing heavily. "Clear," he rasped, coughing slightly from the lingering smell of cordite in the air. "The perimeter is secure. The remaining cowards fell back into the woods."

"Roman?" I demanded, my voice cracking. "Where is Roman?"

"He's in the study," Marcus said, stepping aside. "He's... holding up."

I didn't wait. I rushed down the hallway, Lily cradled securely in one arm, and burst into the study.

The room looked like a war zone. Glass from the French doors was shattered across the Persian rug, bullet holes peppered the mahogany bookshelves, and Roman stood by the broken window, pressing a white cloth to a shallow, bloody graze along his ribs.

When he heard me enter, he quickly lowered the cloth and turned around, forcing a reassuring mask over his weary features.

"Are you alright?" he asked immediately, his eyes scanning me and Lily from head to toe for any sign of injury.

"I'm fine," I breathed, rushing forward to stop right in front of him. I reached out with a trembling hand, touching his uninjured shoulder. "You're bleeding."

"It's nothing. Just a scratch," Roman dismissed it with a shake of his head, though the paleness of his skin betrayed the severity of the adrenaline crash. "Moretti is getting desperate. He knows we have the notebook. If he sends a hit squad here, next time he'll send an army."

"Then we can't stay here," I said firmly.

Roman looked at me, surprised by the sudden steel in my voice. "And where do you propose we go? Every safehouse I own in the city is compromised if Moretti has moles within the municipal databases."

"Not your safehouses," I said, a sudden realization clicking in my mind as I remembered the hidden architectural codes in Caleb's sketchbook. "Caleb’s notebook... look at the bridge designs again. It’s not just a drop point in the city. It’s the old water pumping station beneath the Pilsen railyards. My grandfather helped renovate it back in the seventies. It has a subterranean vault that isn't on any modern city blueprints."

Roman stared at me, the tactical wheels turning rapidly in his mind. "An underground bunker. Sealed off from the grid."

"Caleb used to talk about it all the time," I continued, urgency building in my chest. "He said if the world ever fell apart, that’s where he’d go to hide. If there are physical drives with the syndicate's financial records, that's where he put them."

Roman’s expression shifted from caution to grim determination. He reached out, gently cupping the back of my head, pulling me just an inch closer so our eyes locked.

"We leave in ten minutes," Roman said softly, his voice dropping to a fierce, protective growl. "We go down into the dark, Elena. We find what my brother left behind, and once and for all, we end Dante Moretti."
