PART 5: The Trap Springs

Back at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital, the atmosphere inside the ICU had turned suffocatingly tense. Kara kept checking her watch every thirty seconds, her fingers twitching against her luxury purse. Greg was pacing near the glass door, his eyes darting toward the hallway exit like a caged animal.

"You know, Emily," Kara said, her voice rising to a frantic, nervous pitch. "Greg and I really need to go down to the cafeteria. My blood sugar is dropping, and I feel like I’m going to faint from all this stress."

"Just five more minutes, Kara," I said, standing directly in front of the door frame, blocking her path. "The doctors should be here any second now."

"Get out of the way, Emily!" Greg suddenly snapped, losing his cool completely. He marched toward me, his face red with frustration. "We are leaving. We've been here for hours, and this medical circus is ridiculous. If your parents wake up, call us."

Before he could lay a hand on my shoulder, the heavy double doors of the ICU burst open with a loud, authoritative crash.

It wasn't a team of doctors.

Six state troopers, flanked by two plainclothes investigators from the State Bureau of Investigation, marched down the corridor. Leading the charge was Captain Reyes—a legendary, no-nonsense investigator known for busting high-level corporate and state corruption. Behind them walked Michael, looking exhausted but victorious, holding a secure evidence bag containing the doorbell camera storage card.

Kara gasped, taking a step backward into my mother's bed frame. "What... what is the meaning of this?"

Captain Reyes stepped into the room, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "Kara Vance and Gregory Miller, you are under arrest for the attempted first-degree murder of Thomas and Eleanor Vance, conspiracy to commit capital murder, and grand larceny through corporate forgery."

"This is a mistake!" Greg screamed, his voice cracking as two large troopers grabbed his arms and slammed him against the glass partition. "You have no right! My brother is a detective in the third precinct! Marcus! Call Marcus!"

"Your brother Marcus is currently sitting in the back of a transport van in zip-ties, Gregory," Captain Reyes said coldly, locking the cuffs around Greg's wrists. "He was caught red-handed attempting to destroy state evidence at the crime scene. We have him on a live video stream."

Kara fell to her knees, sobbing violently as the female trooper pulled her arms behind her back. "Emily! Please! Tell them it's a mistake! I love Mom and Dad! I would never hurt them! Tell them, Emily!"

I walked over to my sister, kneeling down so my face was only inches from hers. The sisterly affection I had carried for her for decades was entirely gone, replaced by an unshakeable, righteous fury.

"I saw the video, Kara," I whispered, my voice cutting through her loud wails like a blade. "I saw you hand Mom the poison. I saw you smile at her, and then I saw the face you made when she turned her back. And Michael found the forged will in your condo. You tried to kill our parents for a gambling debt. You are a monster, and you are going to rot in prison for the rest of your miserable life."

As the troopers dragged them down the corridor in handcuffs, their screams of denial echoed through the sterile hospital halls, drawing the shocked stares of doctors, nurses, and patients alike.

I turned back to my mother’s bed. The room was suddenly quiet again, save for the hum of the machines. I collapsed onto the chair, burying my face in my hands as the immense emotional weight of the past week finally broke over me.

Michael walked over, lifting me into his arms and holding me tight. "It's over, Emily," he murmured, kissing the top of my head. "They're safe now. The evidence is secure."

Just then, a faint, raspy sound emerged from the bed.

A weak, frail cough.

I pulled back from Michael, my eyes widening as I looked at my mother. Her eyelids were fluttering, struggling against the heavy weight of the sedation. Slowly, painfully, her pale blue eyes opened, focusing on my face.

"Em... Emily...?" she whispered, her voice barely a breath.

"Mom!" I cried, throwing my arms gently around her shoulders, tears of pure joy streaming down my face. "Mom, I’m here. I’m right here."
