Chapter 4 - The Audit of ArroganceThe next morning, the temperature outside dropped to twelve degrees below zero, and a fresh blanket of gray snow covered the suburban lawns.

Inside the colonial, the atmosphere was a war zone of panic and recrimination.

Daniel had called his lawyer first thing in the morning, only to be told that the trust’s legal standing was airtight. There was no loophole. There was no grace period. The moment Linda Vance exercised her right of revocation, his residency converted from owner-equivalent to illegal squatter within forty-eight hours.

“Pack your bags, Patricia,” Daniel shouted down the upstairs hallway, slamming his bedroom door in frustration. “We have to leave!”

Patricia marched out of the guest room, her face flushed with indignation, her designer winter coat clutched around her shoulders. “Leave? Where are we supposed to go? To a hotel? On whose dime? Daniel, you told me your business was thriving! You told me you owned this estate free and clear!”

“I lied, okay?!” Daniel exploded, turning on her with a snarl. “I lied to impress you! I lied because my credit was shot and Linda was the only one who would bail me out when the bank rejected my financing! I’m drowning, Mom! All my accounts are frozen, my credit cards are maxed out, and if Linda executes this eviction, we’ll literally be sleeping in my Audi by tonight!”

Before Patricia could process the full, catastrophic scope of her son’s financial ruin, heavy knocks echoed against the front door—three loud, rhythmic thuds that sounded like a gavel coming down.

Daniel froze.

He crept down the stairs and peered through the sidelight window.

Standing on the porch wasn't the police. It was Arthur Vance, accompanied by two massive private security guards in black tactical gear and a certified court bailiff carrying a thick leather briefcase.

Daniel’s hands trembled as he unlocked the front door and pulled it open just a crack.

“Mr. Daniel Miller?” Arthur asked smoothly, stepping forward with professional detachment.

“Y-yes?”

“I am serving you with a formal Notice to Quit and Immediate Writ of Possession on behalf of the Oakridge Trust, effective immediately,” Arthur said, handing over a thick packet of legal documents. “Furthermore, due to documented property damage, unauthorized subletting of storage space, and financial fraud regarding your falsified reimbursement records submitted to the trust over the past three years, a full forensic audit has been initiated. All personal assets currently on the premises are subject to immediate inventory and seizure pending civil restitution.”

Patricia pushed past Daniel, her face twisted in rage. “You can’t do this! We have personal property! We have rights! Where is Linda? Send that manipulative witch out here so I can tell her—!”

“Linda Vance is currently having breakfast with her daughter, consulting divorce attorneys,” Arthur interrupted coldly. “And as for your personal property, Mrs. Miller, you have exactly two hours to pack two suitcases each and vacate the premises. The locks are being changed at noon.”

The bailiff stepped past them into the foyer, holding a clipboard, ready to log every television, computer, and designer watch in the house.

Daniel slumped against the doorframe, the color draining entirely from his face. The empire built on lies, cruelty, and borrowed walls had finally collapsed under its own weight.
