Chapter 3 - Into the Digital VaultNavigating the grand staircase in the dark required absolute silence. Every riser of the old mahogany steps was a potential trap if stepped on incorrectly, but Adrien moved like a ghost, his hand casually brushing near the holster concealed beneath his waistband just in case.

We reached the ground floor without disturbing the night guards stationed near the west wing perimeter. The private administrative study—the very room where I had served Adrien his coffee hours earlier—was dark, bathed only in the pale, silver glow of the moon filtering through high leaded windows.

Adrien bypassed the locked oak door using a physical brass key he retrieved from a hidden compartment behind a heavy oil painting of his grandfather. Inside, the room smelled of cold ash, aged paper, and spilled espresso.

He walked straight to the mahogany desk, pulled out a false bottom panel, and revealed a heavy-duty, offline terminal wired directly into the estate’s closed-circuit surveillance network. The screen flickered to life with a soft, green luminescent glow, casting harsh shadows across Adrien’s sharp jawline.

“Standard cloud backups are vulnerable,” Adrien muttered, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced speed. “Every camera feed in this house routes through a local mainframe right beneath this floor. If a file was wiped, the physical drive keeps an unalterable shadow log.”

I stood behind his shoulder, watching the lines of code and hexadecimal directories cascade down the black monitor. My skin still tingled with the residual effects of the sedative, but adrenaline kept the nausea at bay.

“Look there,” I said, pointing a finger at a highlighted block of text. “Timestamp: 02:14:52. The camera in the master suite was manually accessed.”

Adrien clicked the entry. A sub-menu popped up, showing a transfer protocol.

File Export: Master_Suite_Staged_Feed.mp4 Destination IP: External Relay (Port 8443) User Profile: ADMIN_SEC_04

Adrien’s fingers froze on the keys. The ambient temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

“ADMIN_SEC_04,” Adrien repeated, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper. “That profile belongs exclusively to Marcus Vance. My head of security. A man who has sworn blood loyalty to this family for fifteen years.”

“Or a man who realized that framing you with a member of the catering staff creates a public scandal the syndicate board can use to oust you legally without starting a civil war,” I countered softly.

Adrien turned his head slowly, looking up at me with an expression of profound, chilling clarity. “You’ve got a mind like a scalpel, Mara. Most people would be crying in the corner right now, and you’re diagnosing a corporate coup.”

“In emergency medicine, if you panic when the trauma bay floods with blood, the patient dies,” I said simply. “I learned early on that fear is just wasted energy.”

Before Adrien could respond, a soft, electronic chime echoed from the terminal.

The shadow log had just registered a secondary action. Someone was currently attempting to access the terminal from the basement server room.
