Chapter 3 - The Breaking PointThe blade was cold against Claire’s skin, but the threat against Owen ignited a feral, protective fury that bypassed all logic. Rather than freezing in terror, Claire slammed her heel downward with all her weight, catching her assailant squarely on the instep.

The intruder grunted in surprise, his grip loosening for a fraction of a second. Claire twisted violently, biting down hard on the fleshy part of his thumb.

With a curse, the man shoved her backward. Claire crashed against a mahogany side table, sending a heavy ceramic vase shattering across the marble floor.

Within three seconds, the heavy footsteps of armed guards echoed down the corridor. Marcus and two syndicate enforcers rounded the corner, weapons drawn, but the intruder had already vaulted through the open conservatory window into the freezing night, leaving behind only a smear of dark blood on the windowsill where Claire had bitten him.

Adrian rolled into the hallway seconds later, his face dark with a murderous rage. When he saw Claire standing amid the broken ceramic, her breath coming in ragged gasps, his gray eyes narrowed into lethal slits.

"Did they touch you?" Adrian demanded, his voice a low, vibrating growl.

"I'm fine," Claire whispered, clutching her bruised arm. "He... he said the past stays buried. He threatened Owen."

Adrian didn't raise his voice, but the men standing around him instinctively took a step back. "Marcus. Seal the perimeter. Lock down every exit in the tri-state area. Nobody leaves Chicago tonight without my personal authorization."

"Boss, if we lock down the city routes, the police board will—"

"I don't give a damn about the police board," Adrian interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like broken glass. He wheeled himself closer to Claire, his expression softening just an infinitesimal fraction as he looked at her bruised arm. "You should have stayed away. I told you this world was dangerous."

"I didn't ask to be pulled into your war, Mr. Moretti," Claire fired back, a spark of defiance flashing in her green eyes. "Somebody broke into your fortress because of your history. But they threatened my son. That makes it my fight, too."

Adrian stared at her, stunned by her unyielding spirit. No one spoke to him like that. No one challenged his authority in his own house and lived to tell the tale. Yet, looking at her standing there, defiant and shivering in the drafty corridor, he didn't feel anger. He felt an overwhelming surge of respect—and a terrifying, unfamiliar vulnerability.

Later that night, after Claire had safely put Owen back to sleep in the secure nursery, Adrian sat alone in his study, staring at the blood sample Marcus had scraped from the conservatory windowsill.

The DNA lab report had just printed out from the private terminal.

The blood belonged to Detective Sergeant Vance—not a relation to his loyal lieutenant, but a corrupt precinct commander currently on Victor Sterling’s mayoral campaign steering committee.

The net was closing. But Victor Sterling’s political machine was vast, backed by federal judges, corporate syndicates, and a public image polished to a blinding sheen. To bring down a titan like Sterling legally was impossible. To bring him down from the shadows required a trap so intricate that a single misstep would destroy the Moretti empire entirely.
