Chapter 6 - The Light We Built

One Year Later

The morning sun spilled across the high glass windows of a stunning penthouse apartment overlooking the blue waters of Lake Michigan. The rooms were filled with the warm scent of fresh espresso, blooming white orchids, and crisp autumn air blowing off the lake.

I stood by the kitchen island, wearing an soft oversized sweater, reviewing a stack of medical research files.

After taking six months to heal and travel the world with Franco, I had returned to healthcare—not as an exhausted trauma nurse working double shifts in a underfunded ER, but as the Director of the Megan Turner Medical Foundation. Funded entirely by clean, restructured Ravellini corporate capital, my foundation provided emergency medical care, mental health counseling, and secure housing for victims of violent crime across Illinois.

The sound of soft, steady footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor.

Franco walked into the kitchen. He was dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his dark hair neatly styled, looking every bit the formidable, brilliant titan of Chicago business and underworld authority. Yet, the moment his eyes met mine, his entire posture softened into pure warmth.

He walked behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, resting his chin gently on my shoulder.

"You're working early," Franco murmured, kissing the side of my neck softly.

"The new shelter in South Chicago opens next week," I smiled, leaning back against his sturdy chest, turning my head to look at him. "We have twenty-two nurses onboarded."

"I know," Franco grinned, his amber eyes twinkling with pride. "I reviewed the building's security grid this morning. It’s tighter than the Federal Reserve."

"You're incorrigible, Don Ravellini," I laughed softly, turning in his arms to loop my hands around his neck.

"I am a man who protects his treasure," Franco corrected gently, his voice dropping into that deep, intoxicating register that still made my heart flutter after a whole year.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box.

My breath caught in my throat.

Franco dropped down onto one knee on the sunlit kitchen floor. He opened the box, revealing a breathtaking, flawless canary diamond ring that glowed like pure sunlight against the velvet.

"Megan Turner," Franco said, looking up at me with an intense, devotion that filled every corner of my soul. "One year ago, I pulled you out of the dark. But the truth is... you are the one who saved me. You brought light, honor, and love into a life that was consumed by shadows. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you rule this city by my side?"

Tears of pure, unadulterated joy welled up in my eyes, spilling over my eyelashes and falling down my cheeks.

I didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes," I sobbed through a breathless, beautiful laugh, dropping to my knees beside him, wrapping my arms tight around his neck. "Yes, Franco! A thousand times yes!"

Franco pulled me into his arms, kissing me with a fierce, radiant passion as the warm golden sunlight bathed the room around us.

The chain that had once bound my ankle was long gone, melted down and forgotten. In its place was a bond forged in fire, built on absolute trust, fierce protection, and a love that had proven stronger than the deepest dark.
