Chapter 3 - The Mid-Flight AwakeningTen thousand miles away, high above the Pacific Ocean on a first-class flight bound for Los Angeles, Marcus Vance was sipping vintage champagne. He stretched out his legs, feeling an overwhelming sense of triumph. The "Claire problem," as his mother Evelyn called it, was finally solved.

Evelyn sat across the aisle, reading a financial magazine with an expression of smug satisfaction. "You handled that brilliantly, Marcus," she murmured over her champagne glass. "She’ll spend the next week panicking at the resort, realizing she has no money, no passport, and no way home. By the time she manages to contact the embassy, our lawyers will have filed for an emergency abandonment divorce on grounds of desertion."

Marcus chuckled, swirling his drink. "It’s what she deserves. She was getting too independent anyway, questioning the corporate restructuring. Without her phone or passport, she's a ghost in Thailand."

At that exact moment, Marcus’s personal tablet—connected to the flight’s satellite Wi-Fi—buzzed violently against his tray table. A flood of high-priority push notifications began cascading down the screen.

Marcus frowned, picking up the device. He swiped to unlock it, expecting a routine email from his executive assistant. Instead, his banking app flashed a stark, terrifying red banner across the display.

CRITICAL ALERT: ACCOUNT FROZEN. UNAUTHORIZED ACTIVITY DETECTED. ALL ASSETS LOCKED PENDING FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.

Marcus spilled a few drops of champagne onto his designer trousers. "What the hell?" he muttered, tapping frantically on the screen. He switched to his corporate account app. Same thing. Account Frozen. Balance: $0.00.

Evelyn noticed his sudden pallor and leaned across the aisle. "Marcus? What’s wrong? Did the stock market dip?"

"No," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling as he tried to log into his personal trust account. "The accounts... they’re locked. All of them. My personal holdings, the corporate reserves, the trust... everything is frozen."

Evelyn scoffed, though a flicker of unease crossed her features. "Call the bank! It’s obviously an automated security glitch. Tell them who you are—tell them you're a Vance!"

Marcus dialed his private banker’s direct line with shaking fingers. After three rings, a solemn voice answered on the end of the line.

"Mr. Vance," the banker said before Marcus could even speak. "We’ve been attempting to reach you. All accounts associated with your name and your mother's holding entities have been frozen under an immediate federal asset seizure warrant issued by an unlisted institutional trustee."

"An institutional trustee?" Marcus yelled, drawing the attention of nearby first-class passengers. "Are you out of your mind? I am the primary account holder! Reverse this right now!"

"I am sorry, Mr. Vance," the banker replied coldly. "The freeze was authorized by the ultimate majority stakeholder of the parent trust. The name on file... is Claire Vance-Hart."

Marcus dropped the phone. The cabin around him suddenly felt suffocating. He looked at his mother, whose face had gone completely white. They hadn't stranded a helpless orphan. They had just declared war on the person holding the keys to their entire kingdom.
