Chapter 6 - Sunrise Over the Sterling EstateThe snow had stopped falling by the time I returned to the penthouse.

The city outside was bathed in the golden, brilliant light of a crisp winter sunrise. When I pushed open the double doors to the living room, the heavy weight that had crushed my chest for the past three years finally evaporated completely.

Lauren was sitting on the plush white rug by the fireplace, painting with watercolors alongside Sophia. They were laughing—a bright, unburdened sound that echoed off the high ceilings.

Sophia looked up as I walked in, her eyes wide and bright, wearing a clean pink dress that fit her perfectly.

“Daddy!” she cheered, dropping her paintbrush and running across the room to jump into my arms.

I caught her effortlessly, spinning her around as she giggled, burying my face in her hair, breathing in the scent of lavender and clean soap.

Lauren stood up, walking over to us with a soft, radiant smile that made her look years younger. I reached out with my free arm, pulling her into our circle, holding my entire world together where it belonged.

“Is it really over?” Lauren asked softly, resting her head against my shoulder.

“It’s over,” I whispered, looking out the massive glass windows toward the horizon where the sun was climbing steadily into a clear blue sky. “The past is behind us. No more lies, no more shadows.”

Arthur stepped quietly out from the hallway, holding a silver tray with three cups of hot cocoa. He offered a gentle, respectful bow.

“Breakfast is ready, family,” Arthur said, a genuine smile breaking across his weathered face.

We sat together on the floor by the warmth of the fire, sipping hot cocoa as the morning light filled the room with warmth and color. For the first time in three years, I wasn't just surviving.

I was home.
