Chapter 3 - The Federal InterventionThe heavy glass doors of the diner swung open.

Four men in sharp, charcoal-grey tactical suits stepped inside, carrying black leather cases. Leading them was a tall, stern-faced man wearing the dress uniform of a Brigadier General in the United States Army, accompanied by a senior Special Agent from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

General Marcus Vance—no relation to the corrupt local sheriff—stepped over the groaning thug near the entryway, his polished dress shoes clicking against the tile floor.

He swept his gaze over the scene: the shattered coffee pot, the three men bleeding on the floor, and me, standing calmly in a white apron behind the counter.

General Vance came to a halt, snapped his boots together, and rendered a crisp, flawless military salute.

"Colonel Nicole Turner," General Vance said, his voice echoing through the silent diner with absolute, commanding authority. "We received your emergency priority broadcast and the digital evidence package at Special Operations Command."

The word hung in the air like a thunderclap.

Colonel.

Travis stopped groaning, his bloodshot eyes widening in absolute horror as he looked up from the floor at me.

Nobody in Oak Creek knew my actual rank. For twenty years, my mother had simply told the locals I was "in the Army up at Bragg." They assumed I was an administrator or a mid-level officer. They had no idea I was a full Colonel commanding a Special Operations unit, holding top-secret security clearances and direct lines of communication to the Department of Justice.

"General," I said, returning the salute cleanly. "Thank you for the prompt response."

The FBI Special Agent stepped forward, pulling a thick stack of federal arrest warrants from his briefcase.

"Colonel Turner," the agent said, "based on the encrypted telemetry, financial audit trails, and physical evidence package you submitted, the Department of Justice has issued federal RICO warrants for Wade Cain, Travis Cain, Sheriff Arthur Vance, and Deputy Ray Higgins."

"What?!" Travis gasped, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. "You... you can't do this! This is county jurisdiction! My dad—"

"Your father’s commercial quarry operation has been seized under federal asset forfeiture laws as of twenty minutes ago, Mr. Cain," the FBI Agent interrupted coldly. "Federal agents are currently raiding your father’s estate, your construction offices, and the county sheriff’s department. We’ve uncovered six years of illegal land theft, systemic extortion, and state-line racketeering."

Outside, two county sheriff cruisers pulled up behind the black SUVs, their blue lights flashing.

Sheriff Arthur Vance stepped out of his car, holding his belt, looking ready to bluster his way into the diner to arrest whoever was causing trouble for Travis.

However, as Sheriff Vance stepped through the glass doors, he froze dead in his tracks.

Standing inside were six heavily armed Federal Marshals and an Army Brigadier General.

Two Federal Marshals immediately stepped behind Sheriff Vance, grabbing his arms and pulling his service weapon from his holster before he could even register what was happening.

"Arthur Vance," the FBI agent declared, snapping heavy steel cuffs over the sheriff's thick wrists. "You are under arrest for federal obstruction of justice, civil rights violations under color of authority, and accessory to murder in the 2020 death of Thomas Turner."

Vance’s face went completely white. His jaw trembled as he looked from the handcuffs up to me.

"Nicole..." Vance stammered, his bravado completely evaporating. "Nicole, listen... we can talk about this... your dad's accident... it was a misunderstanding..."

"It wasn't a misunderstanding, Arthur," I said, stepping out from behind the counter, looking him dead in the eye. "It was murder. And you covered it up for a price."
