Chapter 4 - The Audit of Sins

By 8:00 AM the following morning, Arthur looked like a broken man.

After spending five humiliating hours locked in a casino holding room, his mother had been forced to surrender her gold jewelry as temporary collateral just so the casino management wouldn't press formal criminal charges against them.

Exhausted, unwashed, and reeking of stale whiskey, Arthur arrived at the headquarters of Apex Regional Distribution for his mandatory meeting.

He stepped into the glass-walled executive conference room on the twelfth floor, expecting to see his regional director, Mr. Harris.

Instead, sitting at the head of the massive mahogany table was Eleanor Vance.

She sat impeccably dressed in a dark blue tailored suit, sipping espresso from a porcelain cup. Beside her were two senior corporate auditors and Richard Sterling—the most feared asset-recovery attorney in the entire state.

Arthur froze at the threshold, his heart dropping into his stomach.

"E-Eleanor?" Arthur stammered, his voice trembling. "What... what are you doing here? This is a private corporate meeting for Apex Distribution."

Eleanor set her espresso cup down with a soft, metallic clink.

"Sit down, Arthur," Eleanor said calmly, her eyes fixed on him like a predator watching an insect.

"I don't have to take orders from you!" Arthur spat, trying to summon his old bravado. "You're my mother-in-law, not my boss!"

Richard Sterling, the attorney, opened a thick leather binder on the table.

"Actually, Mr. Pendleton," Sterling interjected smoothly, "Mrs. Eleanor Vance is the primary shareholder of Vance Global Holdings, which acquired an eighty-two percent controlling stake in Apex Regional Distribution four months ago. So legally, she is not only your boss—she is the sole owner of every asset you interact with daily."

Arthur’s knees went weak. He stumbled backward, collapsing into a leather chair at the foot of the table. "You... you bought Apex?"

"I bought it four months ago, Arthur," Eleanor said softly, leaning forward. "I kept my ownership quiet because I wanted to see if you possessed an ounce of professional integrity. But it seems my trust was entirely misplaced."

She gestured to the auditor beside her, who opened a laptop and turned the screen toward Arthur.

"Over the past three years," Eleanor continued, her voice sharp as a razor, "you have embezzled approximately one hundred and fourteen thousand dollars from Apex Regional Distribution through fraudulent expense reports, inflated shipping invoices, and unauthorized fuel card transfers."

Arthur’s face turned ghostly white. "That's... that's a lie! Those were legitimate business expenses!"

"You transferred fourteen thousand dollars to your sister Sienna's bank account last July under the label 'Logistics Subcontractor,'" Sterling read from the ledger. "You routed eight thousand dollars to your mother’s residential repair company for services that were never rendered. Shall I read the rest of the thirty-six fraudulent transactions, Mr. Pendleton?"

Arthur began to sweat profusely, his collar choking him. "Eleanor... please! It was for the family! I was going to pay it back!"

"You stole from my company to fund your family's parasitic lifestyle," Eleanor said coldly. "And yesterday, you committed an act so vile, so monstrous, that it defies human comprehension."

Eleanor stood up slowly, leaning her hands on the polished wood of the table.

"You stole twenty-three thousand dollars of my daughter's life savings," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling with a terrifying, suppressed rage. "The money she earned through her own sweat and blood to pay for a life-saving birth procedure. You left her bleeding on the floor, told her to take an aspirin, and went to a casino to drink champagne while she almost died."

Arthur swallowed hard, his throat completely dry. "Is... is Melanie okay? Where is she?!"

"She is in a private VIP suite at Saint Jude’s, recovering from a successful C-section," Eleanor replied. "And you have a healthy, beautiful daughter named Clara."

A brief flicker of relief washed over Arthur’s face. "Oh, thank God! She's fine! See? I knew she’d be fine! Women are strong! It was just a false alarm—"

BANG!

Eleanor slammed her hand onto the table so hard the espresso cup rattled.

"Do not dare speak her name!" Eleanor roared, her icy composure shattering into raw, explosive authority. "You do not get to claim relief! You abandoned your wife and child for a pile of gambling debts!"

She gestured to Sterling.

"Mr. Sterling, explain the immediate legal actions," Eleanor commanded, turning her back to Arthur and looking out the window.

Sterling cleared his throat, pushing a stack of legal documents across the table toward Arthur.

"Mr. Pendleton," Sterling announced cheerfully, "we have filed a three-pronged legal offensive against you as of six o'clock this morning."

Criminal Embezzlement Charges: "A formal criminal complaint regarding the $114,000 corporate theft has been submitted to the District Attorney's office. An arrest warrant is being processed as we speak."

Emergency Asset Seizure: "We have placed an immediate freeze on all your bank accounts, vehicle titles, and personal property to satisfy the civil restitution claim."

Sole Custody and Restraining Order: "Mrs. Melanie Vance has filed for emergency divorce, sole legal and physical custody of Clara, and a permanent three-hundred-yard domestic violence restraining order against you and your entire family."

Arthur stared at the documents, his head spinning. "You... you can't do this! You're destroying my life!"

"You destroyed your own life the moment you walked out that front door yesterday, Arthur," Eleanor said without turning around. "Now, you have twenty minutes before the police arrive at this building to execute your arrest warrant. I suggest you sign the emergency custody surrender and divorce papers right now, or Mr. Sterling will ensure the District Attorney seeks the maximum fifteen-year sentence for grand larceny."

Arthur looked at the pen sitting on top of the documents.

His job was gone. His money was gone. His reputation was ruined. He was facing a decade behind bars, and the woman he had tried to keep isolated for five years was standing behind an impenetrable fortress of wealth, law, and maternal vengeance.

With hands shaking uncontrollably, Arthur picked up the pen and signed his name on the dotted line.
