Chapter 5 - The Glass Castle Shatters

"I must admit, Sarah, I underestimated you," Vanessa said, walking slowly into the office, the heels of her designer pumps clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. "I thought you were just a weak, domestic little housewife who would crumble the moment her comfortable life was taken away. But here you are, sneaking into my office like a thief in the night."

"The only thief in this room is you, Vanessa," I said, keeping my voice steady, though my heart was hammering so hard I was afraid she would hear it. I stepped back, keeping my body between her gun and my baby. "You stole my name. You stole my husband. And you tried to steal my daughter."

"I didn't steal anything," Vanessa hissed, her eyes glinting with a dangerous, unstable light. "David came to me. He was drowning, Sarah. He was a pathetic, incompetent fraud who was about to lose everything. I saved him. I built this empire. And all I wanted in return was a legacy. A child. A perfect, clean family name to wash away where I came from."

"And you thought you could just erase me to get it?"

"It was remarkably easy," Vanessa laughed, a sharp, manic sound. "The system is incredibly fragile, Sarah. People only believe what the screen tells them. If the screen says you don't exist, then you don't. Once I put a bullet in you tonight, I will claim you were an unstable stalker who broke into my office to blackmail me. My security guards will testify to it. The police will find the forged documents in your bag and assume you were trying to steal my identity."

"And David?" I asked, trying to keep her talking, knowing every word was being recorded by the wire on my chest and transmitted directly to Marcus and Evelyn’s secure server. "Did you kill him, too?"

"David was a liability the moment he collapsed," Vanessa said, her voice dropping to a chillingly indifferent register. "His heart was weak, yes, but I made sure his medication was... slightly altered over the last few weeks to ensure that the next major stress would be his last. He served his purpose. He gave me the legal rights to the baby, and now he’s gone. And soon, you will be, too."

She raised the gun, aligning the sights with my chest.

"Any last words, Mrs. Mitchell?" she sneered.

"Just one," I said, looking past her toward the glass doors of the office. "Look behind you."

Vanessa laughed, refusing to take her eyes off me. "Do you really think I’m that stupid, Sarah?"

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the office suite exploded inward.

A dozen heavily armed FBI agents, clad in dark tactical gear with 'FBI' emblazoned in bright yellow letters across their chests, poured into the room.

"Federal agents! Drop the weapon! Now!"

Vanessa spun around in shock, her gun hand wavering. Before she could react, two agents tackled her to the floor, knocking the pistol from her grip. It clattered across the hardwood floor, sliding to a stop near my feet.

"Get off me!" Vanessa screamed, her perfect composure completely disintegrating as she was pinned to the concrete, her face pressed against the floor. "I am Sarah Mitchell! I own this building! Arrest her! She’s an impostor!"

Evelyn walked into the room, followed by Marcus and a tall, distinguished-looking man in a tailored suit—the Special Agent in Charge of the Denver FBI field office.

"The game is over, Vanessa," Evelyn said calmly, looking down at the screaming woman. "We’ve been monitoring your corporate servers for the last seventy-two hours. The FBI has already seized your offshore accounts, and the digital forensics team has recovered the entire history of your identity theft ring."

"You have nothing!" Vanessa shrieked, her dark hair falling wild and disheveled across her face.

"We have your full confession, Vanessa," I said, stepping forward and pulling the tiny microphone from my collar. "Every single word you just said about altering David's medication, stealing my identity, and planning to murder me is recorded. It’s over."

As the federal agents dragged Vanessa from the room, her screams of fury echoing down the empty corporate hallway, the Special Agent in Charge turned to me, his expression respectful and warm.

"Mrs. Mitchell," he said, handing me a official federal folder. "We’ve already notified the state authorities and the credit bureaus. Your legal identity has been fully restored. Your accounts are unlocked, and the restraining order against you has been dismissed. You are officially Sarah Mitchell again."

May you like

I took the folder, a single tear of relief slipping down my cheek. "Thank you," I whispered.

I looked down at my hands, no longer shaking. I was alive. My baby was safe. The nightmare was finally over.
