Chapter 2 - THE UNTOUCHABLE SHIELD

By 8:00 p.m. that evening, Audrey was safely settled into a private suite at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

A team of top-tier surgical specialists had already replaced her dressings, emptied and sanitized her surgical drains, and administered proper, monitored pain relief. The physical agony that had gripped her for two weeks finally dissolved into a soft, manageable warmth.

Sitting in the armchair beside her bed, still dressed in his crisp Army officer uniform, was Lucas. His tall, broad frame filled the room, his dark eyes fixed on his sister with a combination of profound relief and fierce anger.

Beside him sat a distinguished man in his late fifties wearing a bespoke grey suit—Uncle Richard Vance, one of the most formidable trial attorneys in the state of Texas.

"They threw away her narcotics and discarded her sterile dressings," the attending physician, Dr. Sarah Lin, reported, holding Audrey’s chart. "If she had attempted physical exertion in the heat, as her husband demanded, her incisions would have torn, leading to severe internal hemorrhaging and systemic infection. It was outright medical abuse."

Richard Vance closed his leather notebook with a soft, authoritative snap.

"Thank you, Dr. Lin," Richard said, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "Please ensure that every scratch, every trace of infection, and every detail of her condition upon arrival is fully documented in a certified forensic medical report."

He turned to Audrey, offering a gentle smile. "How are you feeling, sweetheart?"

"I feel... like I can breathe again," Audrey whispered, her voice still weak but steady. She looked at her brother, her eyes shining with tears. "Lucas... I’m so sorry I listened to Garrick five years ago when he told me to cut contact with you."

Lucas moved his chair closer, taking her small, bruised hand into his large, calloused palm. "Garrick isolated you on purpose, Audrey. That’s what abusers do. He knew that as long as the Vance family was in your life, he could never control you. He told you we were 'too domineering' because he wanted you weak. But that stops tonight."

"What happens now?" Audrey asked.

Uncle Richard stood up, unbuttoning his suit jacket. "Now, Audrey, we execute a legal intervention that your mother-in-law and husband never saw coming. They believed that because Judge Harrison Miller holds a county seat, they were immune to consequences. What they forgot is that Harrison Miller’s judicial district falls directly under federal oversight regarding civil rights violations and domestic endangerment."

"Garrick called my phone ten times while you were in transport," Lucas added, a dark smile touching his lips. "He threatened to have me arrested for military overreach. I sent him a single photograph of the emergency protective order issued against him, along with a copy of the criminal complaint filed with the District Attorney."

"What complaint?" Audrey asked, her eyes widening.

"Deprivation of medical care, felony destruction of controlled substances, domestic abuse of a vulnerable adult, and unlawful restraint," Richard explained crisply. "Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, a team of private movers, escorted by county sheriffs, will clear every single item belonging to you out of that house. And by noon, Garrick will be served with divorce papers."

Audrey took a long, quiet breath. For five years, she had felt like a ghost haunting her own life, constantly walking on eggshells to avoid Miriam’s sharp tongue and Garrick’s cold neglect. For the first time since her diagnosis, she felt whole again.

"Do it, Uncle Richard," Audrey said, her gaze steady and clear. "Take everything back."
