Chapter 5 - The Demolition and the Debt

Thursday afternoon arrived under a bright, cloudless sky.

The story had reached a fever pitch. A local television news crew was parked at the bottom of the cul-de-sac, their satellite dish raised high into the air. A crowd of nearly thirty neighbors had gathered along the sidewalk, carrying lawn chairs and thermos flasks. The "Concrete Karen" saga had officially become regional entertainment.

At 2:00 PM sharp, a sleek black sedan pulled up. Richard Miller stepped out, holding a white envelope. He looked exhausted, haggard, and utterly defeated. Karen was sitting in the front passenger seat, wearing dark sunglasses and refusing to look out the window at the gathering crowd.

Richard walked up my driveway, where Marcus, Sarah Jenkins, and I were standing near the hardened grey fortress. The concrete was now completely set, smooth, rock-hard, and cold to the touch.

Without saying a word, Richard handed the envelope to Sarah Jenkins.

Sarah opened it, carefully inspecting the contents. Inside was a certified cashier's check for $5,200—covering the trespass fees, legal costs, and Marcus's extra labor fees for form disassembly—along with a signed, notarized restraining order and settlement agreement.

"Everything is in order," Sarah announced, turning to Marcus. "You may proceed."

Marcus signaled his crew. Two workers equipped with heavy-duty pneumatic impact drivers and hydraulic spreaders stepped up to the front form wall.

The crowd gathered along the curb went quiet.

BZRRRRRRR-T! BZRRRRRRRR-T!

The heavy steel bolts holding the front concrete form panels together were backed out one by one. The heavy steel framework groaned under the immense pressure of the cured concrete, but Marcus’s crew knew exactly what they were doing. They attached a high-capacity hydraulic spreader between the steel panel and the concrete wall, slowly applying pressure.

With a loud, metallic CLACK, the front steel form popped loose, exposing the solid, flat face of the cured concrete wall.

However, freeing the car wasn't as simple as just removing a wall.

Because the side walls remained in place—forming a permanent, three-foot-tall decorative masonry boundary along the edge of my driveway—there was only a narrow six-foot-wide opening at the front. The SUV’s tires were still surrounded by set concrete footings that had been poured up to the bottom rim of the hubcaps.

"Alright!" Marcus shouted to Richard. "The front forms are clear! But your tires are seated in two inches of set gravel-concrete footing. You're gonna have to drive it out yourself, and you've got about two inches of clearance on either side of your side-view mirrors. If you turn the wheel even half an inch, you're going to scrape the entire side of your car against solid concrete."

Richard turned to look at Karen in the sedan. "Get out here and drive your car!" he yelled.

Karen opened the sedan door, her face pale. "Richard, I can't! What if I scratch it?!"

"I don't give a damn if you tear the doors off!" Richard screamed back, losing his composure completely in front of the news cameras. "I just paid five thousand dollars to get this piece of junk out of prison! Get in the car and move it!"

Trembling, Karen walked up the driveway under the glare of thirty neighboring eyes and the whirring lens of the TV camera.

She squeezed herself through the narrow opening at the front, crawling awkwardly over the hood of her silver SUV and through the open sunroof—because the side doors still couldn't open far enough against the concrete side walls.

The crowd burst into loud laughter and applause as Karen’s designer-clad legs dangled awkwardly in the air before she dropped into the driver's seat.

A moment later, the engine roared to life.

"Go straight!" Marcus guided her, waving his hands. "Do NOT turn the wheel! Straight back!"

Karen shifted into reverse. The tires spun on the smooth concrete footing, screeching loudly—SCREEEEEECH!—before finding traction.

The SUV slowly, agonizingly backed out of the enclosure.

CRUNCH.

A horrific scraping sound echoed through the cul-de-sac as her passenger-side mirror clipped the corner of the permanent concrete pillar, snapping the plastic housing off and sending silver fragments scattering across the driveway.

Karen let out a loud shriek inside the cab, but she didn't stop. She hit the gas, backing out of the driveway at full speed, swinging the rear end of the SUV wildly into the street, barely missing a parked news van, before slamming the car into drive and speeding away down the road, leaving a trail of black rubber and broken plastic behind her.

The crowd along the curb erupted into cheers. Old Mr. Henderson actually stood up and blew a whistle.

Richard stood at the end of the driveway, looking down at the broken silver mirror lying on the ground. He sighed, picked it up, threw it into the trunk of his sedan, got inside, and drove off without looking back.
