Chapter 4 - The Descent Into DenverThe captain’s voice crackled over the intercom ten minutes later, calm and professional, though the underlying tension was palpable. “Ladies and gentlemen, due to an urgent medical and security situation on board, we are diverting our flight to Denver International Airport. Federal law enforcement is meeting us at the gate upon arrival. Please remain seated.”

Panic erupted in pockets of the cabin, but near Row 14, the atmosphere was frozen in amber.

Leah Martin and a second flight attendant had managed to secure a sterile backup cap from the emergency medical kit, sealing Catherine’s IV port and administering a dose of saline to stabilize her blood pressure. Color was slowly returning to Catherine’s cheeks, though her hands still shook as she clutched the small, ruined portable pump like a wounded animal.

"You're safe now, Mrs. Reyes," Arthur said softly, sitting in the empty window seat beside her—having unceremoniously ordered Karen to move to the very last row of the plane under armed guard by two off-duty air marshals who had quietly identified themselves once Arthur took charge.

"Thank you," Catherine whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I... I didn't think anyone was paying attention. She was just... she was so loud, and I was so tired..."

"People like Mrs. Whitmore rely on the fact that decent people are too tired to fight back," Arthur replied, his eyes fixed on the gray clouds rolling past the window as the Boeing began its steep, rapid descent toward Denver. "That’s why the law exists. To protect the people who are too busy fighting for their lives to fight off bullies."

Meanwhile, in the very last row of the aircraft, Karen Whitmore was experiencing the longest hour of her life.

The illusion of her untouchable, upper-middle-class privilege had completely evaporated. The two air marshals sitting on either side of her hadn't spoken a single word since escorting her back there. They didn't care about her designer handbag, her son’s engagement dinner, or her threats to call her divorce attorney. To them, she was simply a hostile package awaiting federal processing.

Karen looked out the tiny oval window at the sprawling concrete runways of Denver International Airport rushing up to meet them.

This isn't happening, she told herself frantically. I’m Karen Whitmore. I belong in first class. I’m going to a party.

But as the heavy wheels of Flight 290 slammed onto the tarmac with a deafening roar of reverse thrusters, Karen knew that her old life had ended somewhere over Nebraska.
