Chapter 4 - THE FACE-TO-FACEThe door to Interrogation Room 3 opened with a heavy click.

Grant jerked his head up, expecting to see another federal prosecutor or his court-appointed attorney.

Instead, Eleanor walked into the room.

She was no longer wearing the torn, mud-stained clothes from the driveway. She wore a tailored charcoal blazer, black trousers, and polished leather boots provided by the field office staff. Her dark hair was brushed back neatly, and her face was calm, pale, and entirely composed.

Behind her stood General Vale, his three silver stars gleaming under the bright fluorescent lights.

Grant stared at her, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Eleanor..."

Eleanor walked slowly to the table, pulled out the metal chair opposite him, and sat down. She did not look at his handcuffs or his disheveled clothes. She looked directly into his eyes—the same eyes that had looked at her with smug cruelty five hours ago on the driveway.

"You said I was a stingy nobody," Eleanor said softly, her voice steady and resonant in the small room. "You told the neighbors I was unstable, unemployed, and incapable of raising my son."

"Eleanor, listen to me," Grant began frantically, leaning forward against his cuffs. "I was forced into this! Apex threatened me! They told me if I didn't get those files, they would destroy my company! I did it to protect us!"

Eleanor held up her hand, stopping him instantly.

"Do not lie to me, Grant. Not anymore," she said quietly. "We listened to the recordings from last night. We saw the Swiss transfer authorization for five million dollars. You didn't do it under threat. You sold your wife and your child for a corporate payout."

Grant’s face twisted into an expression of desperate malice. "You think you've won? You think this old general can protect you forever? Once the lawyers get involved, that emergency order will be thrown out! I am Noah’s father! I have rights!"

Eleanor reached into her blazer pocket, pulled out a document, and laid it flat on the table.

It was an official petition for the total termination of parental rights, accompanied by an emergency order for full legal and physical custody, signed by a Federal District Court Judge.

"You signed a sworn statement this morning claiming you were not fit to be a parent if you were convicted of a felony," Eleanor said, pointing to a highlighted line on the page. "And since you are currently facing twelve federal counts of wire fraud, corporate espionage, falsifying legal documents, and child endangerment... your parental rights have been suspended indefinitely."

Grant stared at the page, his breath coming in shallow hitches. "No... no, Eleanor, please... we can work this out. Think about Noah! He needs a father!"

"Noah needs a parent who loves him," Eleanor said cold and clear. "Not a predator who used him as a bargaining chip to steal an intelligence file."

Eleanor stood up from the table. She pulled the small brass compass from her pocket and held it up so Grant could see it one last time.

"My mother bought her freedom with twenty-four years of silence," Eleanor said softly. "You built your life on a mountain of stolen paper and fake prestige. Tomorrow morning, your company goes into liquidation. Your house on Cedar Ridge will be sold at a federal asset auction. And every neighbor who watched you throw my clothes into the gutter today will watch you leave in a prison transport."

"Eleanor! Eleanor, don't walk out that door!" Grant screamed, straining against his handcuffs as the metal chair scraped violently against the floor. "ELEANOR!"

Eleanor didn't turn back. She walked out of the interrogation room, the heavy steel door shutting behind her, swallowing Grant’s desperate shouts into complete silence.
