Chapter 4 - The Penthouse and the ContractAt midnight, a private elevator whisked Sebastian and me up to the top floor of the Sterling Tower on Fifth Avenue.

The doors slid open directly into a breathtaking, two-story penthouse. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered an unobstructed, panoramic view of the glowing Manhattan skyline and Central Park sleeping under the moonlight. The interior was a masterpiece of minimalist luxury—dark hardwood floors, cream silk rugs, custom marble fireplaces, and soft, warm lighting.

A quiet butler bowed respectfully as we entered, taking Sebastian’s coat and my lace veil.

"Good evening, Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling. Late supper has been prepared in the dining room, and the master suite is ready."

"Thank you, Thomas. You may take the night off," Sebastian said smoothly.

As the butler vanished into the side wing, an awkward, sudden silence settled over the vast living room.

The whirlwind of the day—the church, the public confrontation, the grand reception, the endless toasts—finally came to a halt. We were alone. Husband and wife. Two people who had been strangers eight hours ago.

I stood near the window, clutching my arms, suddenly feeling small inside my heavy white gown.

Sebastian walked over to the bar, poured two fingers of amber scotch into a crystal tumbler, and walked over to me. He didn't offer me the drink; instead, he set it on the side table and stood three feet away, giving me space.

"You must be exhausted, Victoria," he said, his voice deep and comforting.

"My brain feels like it's fried," I admitted, looking down at my dress. "Sebastian... we need to talk about what actually happened today. The legal reality of it."

"Of course," Sebastian said calmly. He gestured toward the plush velvet sofa. "Please, sit."

I sat down, the heavy satin of my dress pooling around me. Sebastian took a seat on the opposite armchair, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

"I know what you're thinking," Sebastian began, his gray eyes clear and honest. "You're wondering if I used your moment of pain to trap you into a high-society publicity stunt. Or if I have some hidden motive."

"The thought crossed my mind," I admitted honestly. "You're one of the most powerful men in New York. You don't just marry someone on a whim at an altar."

Sebastian nodded slowly. "Fair enough. Let me be completely transparent with you, Victoria."

He reached into his leather briefcase sitting near the table and pulled out a slim, elegant blue folder. He set it on the coffee table between us.

"Three months ago, my grandfather’s estate trust activated a clause," Sebastian explained. "In order for me to retain permanent voting control over Sterling International Enterprises—my family’s flagship firm—I must be legally married before my thirty-fifth birthday. My thirty-fifth birthday is in two weeks."

I stared at him, the pieces of the puzzle beginning to fall into place. "So you needed a wife."

"I needed a specific wife," Sebastian corrected firmly. "My board of directors wanted me to marry an heiress from a European banking family—a woman who is vain, cruel, and completely shallow. I refused. I was preparing to fight the board in court when I walked into your church today."

He looked directly into my eyes. "I didn't marry you just to save my company, Victoria. I could have hired an actress for that. I asked you because I have admired your mind, your character, and your resilience since the day I met you. You were trapped in a room of people who took your kindness for weakness. I gave you an exit. But in doing so, you saved me from a corporate trap."

I looked down at the blue folder. "What is in the file?"

"A post-nuptial agreement," Sebastian said softly. "Drafted by my personal attorneys an hour ago. It states that our marriage is a full, equal partnership. You receive fifty percent of my personal liquid assets immediately. You maintain complete autonomy over your career. Should you decide in one year that you want to divorce me, you walk away with fifty million dollars, no questions asked, and full legal protection from your family."

I was stunned. "Fifty million dollars? Sebastian... that’s insane. I don't want your money."

"It's not a payment, Victoria. It's security," Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a tender, intense register. "Your family made you feel like you were disposable. I want you to know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that with me, you are safe. Financially, legally, and personally."

He stood up, looking down at me with immense respect.

"The master suite has two separate master bedrooms connected by a shared sitting room," he added smoothly. "You can take the primary room. The doors have internal locks. I will sleep in the west wing. I expect nothing physical from you, Victoria, until—and unless—you want it."

Tears, warm and unexpected, filled my eyes. After years of being manipulated by Ryan and minimized by my family, standing in front of a man who treated my boundaries as sacred felt like drowning in fresh air.

May you like

"Thank you, Sebastian," I whispered.

He smiled softly, stepping back. "Goodnight, Mrs. Sterling. Sleep well. Tomorrow, we take back everything they tried to steal from you."
