Chapter 2 - The Silent War

The glass of the penthouse windows vibrated slightly as a late-autumn thunderstorm began to roll over Central Park.

By midnight, the apartment was empty, but it felt larger, colder, and more haunted than it ever had before. Richard and Jessica had fled, desperate to reach their legal team before the morning news cycle broke. They had left behind the smell of burnt silk, the clattering iron on the floor, and the shattered remnants of my twenty-eight-year marriage.

I sat at the mahogany dining table, a bag of ice wrapped in a kitchen towel pressed against my burned forearm. The physical pain was a dull, throbbing ache, but it was nothing compared to the cold, crystalline clarity that had taken over my mind.

Across from me sat Arthur Vance, my attorney and one of the few people in New York whom Richard couldn't buy, threaten, or charm. Arthur was seventy, with sharp, hooded eyes and a reputation for dismantling corrupt corporate structures with the precision of a surgeon.

"The files are clean, Margaret," Arthur said, tapping the screen of his tablet. He had been reviewing the data I cloned from Richard's server. "And absolutely devastating. I’ve never seen a corporate executive leave such an obvious digital paper trail. He was so confident in your silence, so assured of his own invincibility, that he didn't even bother to encrypt his primary communication logs with Jessica regarding the Delaware shell."

"He thought I was stupid, Arthur," I said quietly, staring out at the flashing lights of the city below. "He thought because I chose to support him, to raise our son, and to play the hostess, that my brain had turned to mush. He truly believed I would never look at the books."

"It’s a classic narcissistic blind spot," Arthur agreed, adjusting his spectacles. "But we have a major hurdle. The Delaware shell company, AeroGlobal Logistics, is registered entirely in your name, Margaret. On paper, you are the sole managing partner. The forged signatures are highly sophisticated. If the federal prosecutors look at this surface-level data, you are the one they will indict first."

My heart did a slow, heavy roll in my chest. "Even with the files showing he set me up?"

"The files are incredibly helpful, but they show intent, not necessarily execution," Arthur explained. "We need to prove that Richard was the one pulling the financial strings, that the funds from the Jakarta shipments went directly into accounts he controlled, and that you had no knowledge of the transactions. We need the physical banking tokens—the offline hardware keys he uses to authorize the transfers from the Swiss accounts."

"Where would he keep those?" I asked, my mind racing. "He has a safe in his office at the Harrison building, but the security there is state-of-the-art. I can't just walk in and ask for them."

"He’ll have them on his person, or at the townhouse he bought for Jessica in Gramercy Park," Arthur said, looking at me seriously. "But we have to act fast. Now that the FBI has initiated the warehouse seizure, the prosecutors are going to freeze all domestic assets connected to Harrison Fashion Group within forty-eight hours. That includes this penthouse. That includes your personal accounts."

"Let them freeze it," I said, a cold resolve settling into my chest. "I’ve spent half my life living in luxury built on lies. I’d rather live in a studio apartment with my integrity than spend another day in this palace of glass."

Arthur smiled, a thin, proud line. "That’s the Margaret Harrison I remember from our university days. But we aren't going to let him take everything, Margaret. We’re going to take his company, his reputation, and his freedom."

The phone on the table buzzed. It was an unrecognized number. I slid the bar and pressed it to my ear.

"Margaret," Richard’s voice was low, vibrating with a dangerous, controlled fury. He was no longer shouting; he was negotiating, which made him twice as dangerous. "I hope you’ve had time to calm down and realize the gravity of what you’ve done. If you release those files to the authorities, you go down with me. You signed the AeroGlobal registry. Your name is on every customs declaration for the Jakarta shipments."

"My forged name, Richard," I said calmly.

"Try proving that to a federal grand jury," he sneered. "They don't care about marital drama. They care about paper. And on paper, you’re the mastermind. But I’m willing to offer you a way out. We sign a mutual non-disclosure agreement. I give you the penthouse, a twenty-million-dollar cash settlement, and we quiet down the divorce. You destroy the drive, and I handle the feds."

"And what about Jessica?" I asked, a cold smile touching my lips. "Does she get to keep the corporate title she stole from me?"

May you like

"Jessica is carrying my heir, Margaret," Richard said, his voice dropping to a harsh, territorial whisper. "She is the future of Harrison Fashion. You are the past. Don't make me destroy you."

"You already tried, Richard," I said, and hung up the phone.
