Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary Beneath the City

The armored Mercedes van rumbled softly as it navigated the unpaved access road leading away from the lakefront cliffs. Inside the climate-controlled rear cabin, the dim amber lighting cast a warm glow over the medical bassinet Viktor had hastily assembled using emergency supplies from the estate's trauma kit.

I stood over the bassinet, gently adjusting the intravenous saline line running into a tiny butterfly needle taped to Leo’s hand. The baby’s color had improved remarkably over the last two hours; his cheeks held a soft, healthy pink, and his breathing was regular and deep.

Across from me sat Viktor, the massive, stone-faced security chief who looked like he had survived a dozen cartel wars and walked away without blinking. Right now, however, his calloused hands were carefully sliding a fresh magazine into an assault rifle while keeping one eye on the rear security monitors.

"He's going to make it," I whispered, wiping a stray tear from my cheek as I watched Leo stir slightly in his sleep.

Viktor glanced up, his harsh features softening just a fraction. "Mr. Rossi built this empire on paranoia, Miss Vance. He trusted everyone in that mansion—his accountants, his nurses, his inner circle. The one person he didn't expect loyalty from was the girl cleaning his floors."

"I wasn't being loyal to him," I said quietly, looking down at my hands, which still bore the faint calluses of scrubbing marble and carrying heavy trays. "I was just... trying to save a child. I know what it feels like to hold a baby and watch life slip through your fingers. I couldn't let it happen twice."

Viktor didn't reply immediately. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, worn manila envelope, sliding it across the metal table toward me.

"What is this?" I asked, hesitating.

"Background check," Viktor said bluntly. "When you applied for the maid position three weeks ago, our HR algorithms flagged your employment gap. I dug deeper. I know about your former partner, the hospital negligence, and the loss of your daughter, Lily."

My breath hitched. A cold spike of panic flared in my chest. "Are you going to use that against me? Are you going to throw me out?"

"Mr. Rossi doesn't throw away people who save his bloodline," Viktor replied, his voice flat and authoritative. "The file stays sealed. As far as the city of Chicago is concerned, Hannah Vance is now a permanent member of the Rossi household staff—with a salary and security clearance that outranks every capo on our payroll."

Before I could process the staggering weight of his words, the front cabin door of the van slid open.

The heavy armor-plated side door clicked unlocked, and Lorenzo climbed into the back cabin.

He looked exhausted. His tailored charcoal suit was torn at the shoulder, his shirt collar stained with soot and dried blood, and a thin scratch ran along his jawline. But his eyes were blazing with an unmistakable, triumphant fire.

"The East Wing is secure," Lorenzo announced, collapsing onto the leather bench opposite me. He reached up, loosening his ruined tie and tossing it onto the floor. "The Syndicate council's advance squad was neutralized by our perimeter units before they could breach the lower vaults. Dr. Vance is currently secured in an interrogation cell three miles underground."

He looked past me, his gaze locking onto the bassinet where little Leo was sleeping peacefully.

Lorenzo slowly stood up, walking over to the bassinet as if approaching a holy shrine. He stared down at his son for a long, quiet moment, his broad shoulders rising and falling with a deep, shaky breath. Slowly, cautiously, he reached out and touched the baby’s tiny, closed fist with the tip of his finger.

Leo instinctively curled his fingers around Lorenzo’s index finger, holding on with surprising strength.

A single tear tracked down the rugged cheek of Chicago’s most feared mafia boss.

He didn't try to hide it. He just looked up, meeting my eyes across the small medical crib, and for the first time all night, the armor completely fell away.

"You saved us both, Hannah," Lorenzo whispered, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. "How do I even begin to repay a debt like that?"
