Chapter 3 - The Hydrangea Ambush

Nia didn't argue. She bolted up the wooden stairs, her socks silent against the carpet, heading straight for the nursery at the end of the hall.

Inside the small, star-patterned room, three-year-old Leo was sleeping on his stomach, his thumb tucked into his mouth, his little foot sticking out from under his dinosaur comforter.

"Leo, baby, wake up," Nia whispered, gently lifting him into her arms.

Leo blinked his heavy eyelids, rubbing his dark eyes with his little fist. "Mommy...? Is it morning? Do I go to preschool?"

"No, sweetie," Nia whispered, quickly pulling a thick blue winter coat over his pajamas, zipping it up to his chin. "We're going on a night adventure. We're going to ride in a big car with a giant dog."

Leo’s eyes snapped wide open, instant toddler excitement replacing his sleepiness. "A giant doggy?! Like a bear?!"

"Just like a bear," Nia smiled, pressing a kiss to his forehead while her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She grabbed his pre-packed emergency backpack—the one she always kept in the closet, stocked with pull-ups, snacks, and two changes of clothes—and slung it over her shoulder.

Downstairs, the sound of breaking glass was surprisingly soft.

It wasn't a shatter; it was a localized, controlled CRACK—the sound of a specialized hydraulic glass-cutter piercing the side pane of the dining room window.

Nia crept out to the top of the stair landing, clutching Leo tightly to her chest. She peered over the wooden bannister into the dark hallway below.

The side door near the dining room creaked open.

A broad-shouldered man in a wet tactical jacket stepped silently onto the hardwood floor. He was holding a suppressed submachine gun in his right hand and a tactical flashlight in his left, the narrow beam sweeping across the framed family photos on the wall.

Vance.

The mercenary took two quiet steps forward, his combat boots leaving wet, muddy tracks on Nia’s clean rug. He raised his radio to his shoulder, whispering in a low, guttural German accent: "Unit One, I am inside. The house is quiet. Deploying sleep gas into the main HVAC unit now—"

He never finished the sentence.

From the dark shadow beneath the dining room table, a one-hundred-and-sixty-pound silver shadow exploded forward with the force of a freight train!

ROAR!

It wasn't a bark. It was a terrifying, guttural roar of absolute canine rage. Thor hit Vance at chest height, his massive front paws slamming into the mercenary's tactical vest with enough force to lift the six-foot-two man off his feet!

Vance crashed backward against the wall, his submachine gun flying from his grip, clattering across the floor.

Before the mercenary could recover his breath, Jyn emerged from the shadow of the pantry like a specter.

With blinding, lethal precision, Jyn stepped inside Vance’s reach. His left hand clamped down on Vance’s throat, while his right forearm struck the side of the man’s neck in a textbook tactical nerve strike.

Vance’s eyes rolled back. His body went limp, sliding down the wallpaper into an unconscious heap on the floorboards.

Thor stood over the fallen mercenary, his chest heaving, a low growl still vibrating in his throat. In his jaws, held with bizarre, gentle care throughout the entire fifty-second assault, was Captain Squeaks.

SQUEAK.

Jyn knelt beside the unconscious man, quickly searching his pockets. He pulled out a encrypted tactical radio, a set of vehicle keys, and a heavy black electronic keycard bearing the gold crest of the Chong Family Holdings.

Jyn looked up at the stair landing, his silver eyes meeting Nia’s wide, shocked gaze.

"The side street is clear," Jyn said calmly, racking the slide of Vance's fallen weapon and engaging the safety. "Vance came alone through the garden. The driver in the second Maybach is waiting for his radio signal."

Jyn pressed the button on Vance's radio, mimicking the mercenary's low German accent with terrifying perfection: "Unit One. Target secured. Bring the secondary transport to the rear alley."

A crackle came through the speaker: "Copy that, Vance. Moving now."

Jyn looked up at Nia. "We have ninety seconds before the second car leaves its containment position at the front of the house, creating a gap in their perimeter. That is our window."

Nia carried Leo down the stairs, her knees shaking slightly, but her focus absolute. "Where are we going?"

Jyn reached out, gently taking Leo’s backpack from her shoulder, while Thor trotted over, placing his massive head against Leo’s small knee.

Leo gasped in pure, unadulterated joy, reaching out his chubby hands to bury them in Thor’s thick silver fur. "DOGGY! Mommy, the doggy has a ducky!"

"Yes, baby," Nia breathed, looking at Jyn. "The doggy is a hero."

Jyn looked at the child. For a second, the cold, lethal operative vanished, replaced by a man looking at his own flesh and blood with a reverence that bordered on holy. He reached out, his hand trembling slightly, and gently touched the silver birthmark behind Leo’s left ear.

"He has your eyes, Nia," Jyn whispered softly.

"He has your chin," Nia replied, her tone softening despite the madness surrounding them. "Now let's get my son out of Chicago."
