Chapter 4 - The VIP Lounge Betrayal

Upstairs in the private VIP lounge of The Gilded Raven, the atmosphere was one of quiet, opulent celebration.

Claire Whitman sat on a velvet sofa, sipping a glass of vintage champagne. Opposite her sat Arthur Vance, the syndicate’s chief legal counsel, a slick man in an eight-thousand-dollar suit who had served the Cross empire for fifteen years.

"Everything is prepared, Mrs. Cross," Vance said smoothly, sliding a gold fountain pen across the marble table toward her. "Once Evan sends the biometric key from downstairs, the board will convene an emergency midnight session. By 8:00 AM, you will be declared the interim CEO of Cross Enterprises."

Claire picked up the pen, smiling at her reflection in the dark glass window. "And the housemaid? Nora Harper? Have you arranged for her to be dealt with?"

Vance smiled thinly. "She was picked up at the townhouse thirty minutes ago by our extraction team. She is currently being held in the lower garage. Once we confirm Damian’s death, we will frame Nora for the poisoning. A desperate servant trying to rob her employer. It's a clean story. The press will consume it whole."

"Perfect," Claire purred, leaning back against the velvet cushion. "Damian spent years acting like a saint. It's only fitting his precious little charity projects burn down with him."

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the VIP lounge shattered inward!

BOOM!

Splinters of mahogany exploded into the room as a body was thrown through the entrance, crashing into the glass coffee table and sending champagne bottles smashing to the floor!

It was one of Claire’s private security guards—unconscious, his body covered in bruises!

Claire shrieked, dropping her champagne glass, jumping to her feet! Vance scrambled backward, dropping his gold pen into the mess!

Through the dust and splintered wood stepped Damian Cross.

He had wiped the blood from his face, but his clothes were dark with grime, his eyes burning with an incandescent, terrifying rage. In his right hand, he held a heavy tactical pistol. In his left hand, he held Lily’s small hand, keeping her safely behind his frame.

"Damian?!" Claire gasped, her voice reaching a high, shrill pitch of utter disbelief! "How... how are you alive?! Where is Evan?!"

"Evan is resting in the basement, Claire," Damian said smoothly, stepping into the room with steady, terrifying precision. "He sent his warm regards."

Vance immediately reached for his phone on the table—

BANG!

Damian didn't even look as he fired a single round, shattering Vance’s phone into a hundred plastic fragments! Vance screamed, pulling his bleeding hand back, falling onto his knees!

"Touch another key, Vance, and the next bullet goes through your eye," Damian warned coldly.

Claire backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the rainy street below. Her elegant composure had completely disintegrated, replaced by a wild, feral panic.

"Damian... listen to me!" Claire stammered, raising her hands in surrender, her voice trembling. "It was Evan! He forced me! He threatened to kill me if I didn't help him poison your drink! You know I love you, Damian! I was just trying to survive!"

Damian walked slowly toward her, his heavy leather shoes crunching over the broken glass on the floor.

"You took my drink," Damian said softly. "You put neurotoxin in it. You ordered the execution of Nora Harper. And you did it all while standing next to my daughter."

Claire froze, her eyes darting down to the tiny girl standing beside Damian.

"Daughter?" Claire whispered, her jaw dropping. "That... that's the maid’s brat!"

Damian stopped two feet from Claire. He raised the weapon, pointing the barrel straight between her cold, blue eyes.

"Her name is Lily Cross," Damian said, his voice echoing through the ruined lounge like thunder. "And you just made the biggest mistake of your miserable life."
