Chapter 5 - The Drake Hotel ConfrontationThe Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a masterpiece of Gold Coast luxury, featuring crystal chandeliers, plush crimson carpets, and gilded pillars. But on this Friday morning, the room was locked down under heavy armed security.

Around a massive oval mahogany table sat the heads of Chicago’s four major criminal syndicates: the Moretti family, the Lucchese crew, the Irish Westside mob, and the Allied Docks Commission.
At the head of the table sat Salvatore Moretti—a fat, sixty-year-old man with silver hair, a heavy gold chain around his neck, and eyes like a greedy viper.
"Reyes thinks he owns this entire damn city!" Moretti growled, slamming his fist onto the table. "He walked four armed men into Pilsen—my territory—and snatched a guy who owed my captains two hundred grand! If we let him break the border treaty over a nobody, what's next? He takes our docks? Our casinos?"
The other syndicate bosses murmured in low, uneasy agreement. They feared Damian Reyes, but they feared an unchecked expansion of his power even more.
"Where is Reyes?" the head of the Irish mob asked, checking his watch. "The meeting was set for nine."
At exactly 9:01 a.m., the double doors of the ballroom burst open.
Damian Reyes walked into the room, flanked by Marcus Vance and six heavily armed security operators in dark tactical suits. Damian wore a bespoke charcoal double-breasted suit, a dark red silk tie, and a trench coat draped over his shoulders like a cape. He looked less like a mobster and more like an emperor entering a conquered province.
The room fell dead silent.
Damian didn't take an open chair. He walked straight to the head of the table, stopping directly opposite Salvatore Moretti. He pulled off his leather gloves and tossed them onto the polished wood.
"You called a council, Salvatore," Damian said, his voice smooth, relaxed, and utterly dominant. "Speak quickly. I have a luncheon at one."
Moretti stood up, his face flushing dark red with anger. "Don't play games with me, Reyes! You took Hector Cruz out of Pilsen without my permission! That's a direct violation of the 2021 Boundary Accord!"
"Hector Cruz is a animal who beat a woman who lives under my protection," Damian said flatly, his dark eyes locking onto Moretti’s with terrifying intensity. "His debts are irrelevant. His life is forfeited."
"She was a maid!" Moretti roared, throwing his arms up. "A damn domestic worker! You're risking a full-scale turf war between our families over a maid?"
Damian leaned forward over the table, pressing his hands flat against the wood, bringing his face within inches of Moretti’s.
"She is a human being, Salvatore," Damian whispered, every word carrying the weight of a sledgehammer. "Something you forgot how to be twenty years ago. And under the laws of my house, anyone who hurts my people answers to me. Not to a council. Not to a treaty. To me."
Moretti sneered, reaching into his coat. "You think you can just march in here and dictate terms—"
Before Moretti’s hand could reach his inner pocket, Marcus Vance drew a suppressed pistol and aimed it directly between Moretti’s eyes. Simultaneously, Damian’s six tactical operators raised their weapons, locking red laser sights onto the foreheads of every boss and bodyguard in the room.
Gasps of terror echoed through the ballroom.
"Listen to me very carefully, all of you," Damian announced, his voice ringing through the cavernous hall like a trumpet of doom. "The era of your petty violence, your street extortion, and your abuse of the helpless in this city is coming to an end. As of nine o'clock this morning, the Reyes organization is assuming full financial control of the Pilsen district."
"You can't do that!" the Irish boss shouted, sweat pouring down his temple under the red laser sight.
"I can, and I have," Damian replied calmly. He pulled a thick legal document from his coat and tossed it onto the table. "I just purchased the outstanding debt portfolios of every syndicate represented in this room from the Swiss holding groups that fund your operations. You don't owe each other money anymore. You owe me."
He looked around the table at the terrified, pale faces of the most powerful criminals in Chicago.
"If any of you—or any of your men—so much as looks at a civilian, a worker, or a woman in this city with violent intent," Damian warned, his voice dropping into a chilling register, "I will call in your debts, seize your assets, and bury you three feet beneath the railyards."
He picked up his gloves, pulling them back onto his hands with deliberate care.

"Hector Cruz’s two-hundred-thousand-dollar debt is settled," Damian added, turning toward the exit. "Consider it paid in full by your loss of Pilsen. Have a pleasant afternoon, gentlemen."
Damian turned on his heel and strode out of the ballroom, his trench coat billowing behind him, leaving the four most powerful mob bosses in Chicago sitting in shattered, silent defeat.
